This course introduces students to abstract algebra. The students are expected to be able to give definitions, prove theorems presented in class, and solve both computational problems and problems involving students' own proofs.

Prerequisite

Ideals, Varieties, and Algorithms by David A. Cox, John Little, and Donal O'Shea (2015), Fourth Edition. More information about the book is available here.

The electronic version is available for viewing at the libraries of the Graduate Center and of Hunter College.

You are expected to do the homework given here and read the course text before the classroom discussion of each topic as indicated in homework.

The grade will be given on the basis of quizzes (10%) given in class without prior announcement, two written tests during the semester (25% per each), and written final exam (40%).
