Online Lesson
Tonight we will have an online class that will use a variety of tools.
We are going to discuss three main topics:
- Classroom management in science classrooms
- Controversial issues in science education
- Ways to make science learning fun.
- Please complete the course evaluation if you haven't done so already.,
- Before class, make sure that you can access the following:
- ScienceMOO - http://sciencemoo.org:7001/ (You should have received your username and password by email. If you have problems logging in, you can login as a guest and you do not need a password)
- Read through the
instructions on how to use ScienceMOO at the following
link:
- Our online class in BigBlueButton. It is located here: http://tinyurl.com/6mprbf6
- Enter your full
name and the password is student123
- Open a separate
window or tab in your web browser and watch the student
tutorial video which shows how to use
BigBlueButton as a viewer.
- Our ustream live video and chat channel that is located here http://www.ustream.tv/channel/qc-science-education
- The password to access the live video channel is seys
- You should have received an invitation to join our wiki
at http://funscience.wikispaces.com/.
Check you email and accept the invitation and choose your
username and password.
- I recommend that you use Firefox or Google Chrome for our online class.
- Make sure you have earphones or a speaker so you can hear audio. You do not need to have a webcam or video camera but if you do have one, you can try it out during our BigBlueButton session if you wish.
- Read "Classroom management for science teachers".
- Browse through the links on classroom management.
- Classroom management 101
- The really big list of classroom management resources
- Classroom management from the teachers guide
- Behavior and discipline links
- Classroom management tips from Education World
IMPORTANT:
If you have a problem with your web browser, e.g. Java does
not work with Firefox, or Chrome, see the following links:
- I found that Java was disabled after I updated my Firefox web browser. I had to go into Tools, then Add-Ons, the Plugins. I scrolled down and clicked on the enable buttons next to Java and it worked right away.

Procedure for the lesson
Most online courses use a learning management system such as BlackBoard or Moodle to coordinate all learning activities, and to record attendance, participation and grades. Many of the activities are asynchronous and the students logon and do their assignments whenever it is convenient. There is much less synchronous interaction with a teacher and other students than in a face to face classroom.
Tonight we are going to use three different technology tools that can be used to provide online synchronous learning activities. Each tool has advantages, disadvantages and limitations as you will soon see. We will also use a tool called a wiki that is a great tool for group projects.
Activity 1 - Classroom management - 4pm to 5pm
- Launch your web browser and login to BlackBoard and go to
the Discussion board.
- Post three examples of classroom management problems you
saw during ICE. Include as much detail as possible for
each of the problems you saw.
- Login to ScienceMOO at http://sciencemoo.org:7001. Go to our classroom. Sit at your assigned table. For each of the listed problems, discuss how you would deal with the situation and how the situation could be prevented. One person in your group should post the answers on the discussion board.
- After posting your group's responses, take a look at the
problems, solutions and prevention posted by other
groups.
- You can stay logged in to ScienceMOO, but now we are going
to try out another technology tool that you can use for
online lessons.
- Open up another tab in your web browser.
- Go to our Science Education live video and chat channel that is located here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/qc-science-education
- Enter the password: seys
- You should see and hear the live video presentation from the instructor.
- The goals of this activity are to
- Idenfity controversial issues in science, especially those in your own science content area
- Consider how you will teach and approach these topics in your classroom.
- Click the "Check in and chat button" on the right.
- The instructor will lead a whole class discussion on the topic of controversial issues in science education.
- Please answer questions from the instructor by typing in the chat window. You can also ask questions here.
- After the summary of controversial issues, post one of the issues that you think you might encounter in your subject area on the discussion board in BlackBoard. Describe how you would approach the topic.
- Pause or stop the video stream from our ustream.tv channel so that it doesn't waste bandwidth.
- Go to our BigBlueButton course at the following url: http://tinyurl.com/6mprbf6
- Type in your Full name
- Choose the correct course from the drop down menu.
- Type in the password: student123
- Click the "join" button.
- You will now be in the BigBlueButton online classroom.
- The instructor will provide a short presentation on the topic. If you have questions you can enter them in the chat window.
- Check out scienceheroes.com and register as a teacher.
- Science and fun. Students will divide into groups and locate and develop resources for science teachers on the following topics:
- Science jokes
- Science songs
- Science videos
- Science games
- Fun Science web sites
- Each group should post their results on http://funscience.wikispaces.com. Please also post the links on the Discussion Board in BlackBoard.
