| This is an introduction to archaeological field survey methods. We will besurveying the grounds of the historic Queens County Farm.. This archaeological project will be looking for the remains of a late 17th century or early 18th century house that may have been located on the Farm. This first Adriance House may have been build 50 to 60 years before the standing 1752 Adriance House. Our goal this year is to test the property to understand what features may be present along the sourn tier of the property.. The results of this year's research will guide research next fall. |
| This year's survey will excavate the area to the southeast of the standing house. We have not tested in this area before so it is an exploratory phase. We will be looking for undisturbed deposits that will give us a glimpse into the life in 17th and 18th century Flushing. |

| It might seem odd to have readings for a field methods course. However, our field time will be very limited. The readings will allow you to gain some exposure to methods before we apply them in the field. The text is very comprehensive. There are methods and issues raised in the text that will never arise in the course of our Queens County Farm survey work. But this way you will be ready for your next fieldwork experience. |

| Office hours are your opportunity to drop by for a chat about any aspect of the course. I will be in PH 313B on Mondays from 9:00 - 10:00 AM and 2;00 - 2:50 PM. Please drop in. You are welcome. You can work on the site paperwork, process artifacts, or even work on assignments for other classes. Kiely 053 will be open to you. Otherwise catch me in Powdermaker Hall. I am in almost every day, but I will be at the Graduate Center on Wednesdays. |
| Reading Schedule |
| I have done my best to organize the lectures and readings so that they fit into the likely sequence of our fieldwork. Keep up with the reading and you'll find that you will be better prepared for what will happen at the site. |
| Grading |
| You will be evaluated according to several criteria. You will keep a field journal. This journal will cover the lab, lecture, reading and fieldwork. The various fieldwork forms (plan maps, strat profiles, lab catalogues, etc.) will be checked. The amount and quality of your work will determine your grade. I have made a professional commitment to the Queens County Farm Museum. I am depending on your professional participation. |
