Committee on Athletic Policy
Academic Senate, Queens College

1. Duties:

a) To monitor the intercollegiate athletic program at Queens College. b) To consult with and advise the Director of Athletics and/or the Sports Allocation Board (SAB) on matters of athletic policy and administration. c) To submit to the Academic Senate an annual report prior to April 15 on the implementation of Senate policies regarding intercollegiate athletics.

d) To recommend to the Academic Senate changes in athletic policies, as necessary.

2. Recruitment of Athletes:

e) Recruitment of athletes shall fall within the guidelines of the CUNY Board of Trustees, and the NCAA. f) No tax levy monies or student fees, including SAB funds, may be used for the recruitment of athletes.

g) All funds for recruitment purposes shall be dispersed by CAP.

* 3. Subsidization of Athletes: (Grants in Aid)

h) Subsidization of athletes shall fall within the guidelines of the CUNY Board of Trustees and the NCAA. i) No tax levy monies or student fees, including SAB funds, may be used for the subsidization of athletes. j) All funds for subsidization purposes are to be dispersed by CAP (section g above). k) Students receiving subsidization must maintain a 2.0 cumulative index and continuously maintain "normal progress" (as defined by the NCAA) each year of their subsidization. Failure to comply with this regulation may result in the loss of the student's eligibility and aid. l) Further criteria for subsidization of teams and athletes may be developed by CAP, and submitted to the Academic Senate for Senate approval. No new criteria shall become effective until approved by the Academic Senate. (*Also See Standing Rule XI) m) CAP shall serve as the sole body of appeals for students who have been denied a renewal of their grants in aid.

i. Students who lose academic eligibility may also lose eligibility for subsidization.

ii. Students who lose and then later regain academic eligibility may apply to CAP for restoration of subsidization. Restoration is not automatic, and will be at the discretion of CAP subject to both the availability of funds and to a re evaluation of the student's qualifications.

4. Membership: eight voting, two nonvoting

a) Dean of Students. b) Executive Officer of the Undergraduate Scholastic Standards Committee. c) Representative of the Provost's Office. d) Chairperson of SAB. e) One faculty member nominated by the President and elected by the Academic Senate for a two year term. f) A slate of six students nominated by the SAB, from which three students shall be elected by the Academic Senate at the April Senate meeting, for a one year term. g) Ex officio (nonvoting): Athletic Director Vice President for Finance and Business
