Meeting in Cong. Ackerman's DC Office -- Caption/Short Info
Meeting Topic: Queens College Students and 1960s Civil Rights Activities

The involvement of former Queens College students and faculty with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s was the subject of a meeting at Congressman (D-NY) Gary Ackerman's office in Washington DC this past winter. Pictured L. to R. are Michael Wenger ('65 ), Ronald Pollack ('65 ), Helen Hendricks (Office of Student Activities), Gary Ackerman ('65), and Mark Levy ('64).
The activities these five represented include, along with many other Q.C. students: 1963 Prince Edward County, Virginia, freedom school; South Jamaica Student Help project; 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer voter registration and freedom schools; July 1964 Campus Freedom Fast; 1965 Mississippi church rebuilding initiatives. Q.C. students also chartered their own bus to go to the 1963 March on Washington, D.C., where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous "I Have A Dream" speech.
As students, in addition to the civil rights activities, these alumni had also been active at Q.C. during that period, where they were assisted and encouraged by Ms. Hendricks in the Office of Student Activities, in student government and newspaper activities, as well as in the QC Chapter of CORE.
After graduation, the pictured alumni continued their social values and political commitments into successful and meaningful careers of public service and activism. Michael Wenger currently is Acting Vice President, Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies; Ronald Pollack is Executive Director of Families USA; Helen Hendricks, retired from Q.C. in the Fall of 1992 as Pre-Professional Advisor and Assistant to the Dean of Students; Gary Ackerman, serves in the U.S. House of Representatives (NY's 5th C.D.); and Mark Levy recently retired as Executive Director of a union, CIR/SEIU.
Reestablishing contacts with additional Q.C. Civil Rights activists, collecting and preserving their archives and oral histories at the College, and finding ways to bring this proud history to the attention of current generations of students have been topics of discussion with various faculty on campus.

Arnold Franco '43 Returns to Omaha Beach!
Arnold Franco '43 returned to Normandy, France, on June 30, 2007. On that day a human chain of some 3,000 Normandy residents spelled out on the sands of Omaha Beach the words, "France will never forget", between an American flag and a French flag. Arnold was accompanied by his three adult grandchildren. At 10 a.m. a ceremony was held at the American cemetery right on the cliffs above the beach. United States Ambassador Stapleton spoke followed by a few words from Mr. Franco. Several hundred cemetery visitors gathered around to watch and listen. Please click here to see photos of the event.

Class of 1982 Alums Return to Campus
When Ellen Wasserman graduated from Queens College in June of 1982, she was friends with 2 other couples and dating her boyfriend, at the time, who later became her husband. All three couples married within 3 years of graduating and are all still married and still remain friends. Two of the couples still live in Queens (Ellen and Allan are one of the couples) and the last lives in Massapequa. When their 25th reunion came up, they all decided to go out to dinner to celebrate on the exact date of graduation (June 2nd) and they decided the best way to commemorate the occasion was to go back to the QC campus to look around. Because Ellen and Allan still live in Queens and since their sons have gone to Queens College camp for many years they knew what the campus looked like. Their other friends from Queens also were familiar with the campus. But the couple from Long Island was surprised to see the many changes on the campus. The couples took pictures and reminisced and then went to have Italian food at the pizza place across the street on Kissena Boulevard (Gino's.)

What a wonderful way for them to celebrate their 25th reunion! The couples who were all from the Class of 1982 are:

Ellen Berman Wasserman and Alan Wasserman
Robin Nuzie Belfer and David Belfer
Caryn Salmon Ratner and Jeffrey Ratner

Were you a member of the Queens College Waterpolo Team?
The 2006 men's water polo season is off and running. The team looks to dramatically improve this year with the goal of reaching the Eastern Championship Tournament. Along the road to returning to its former powerhouse status, the Queens program would like to involve its alumni whom helped start the reputation of its water polo team. Coach Joe McCommons would like to compile a list of alumni players to coordinate events and organize ways to support the water polo program. Please contact him at Joseph.McCommons@qc.cuny.edu. The team's schedule and roster are also available on the school website at http://qcpages.qc.cuny.edu/QCSPORTS/home.html.
