Undergraduate Research Mentoring in Ecology, Evolution and Behavior
Call for Applications
Queens College is announcing the establishment of an NSF-funded undergraduate research program in the fields of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior. This program will promote and support the participation in research of urban undergraduate students, especially students from underrepresented minorities. Over the next four years, twelve students will participate in the research and mentoring activities funded by the program. These students will receive financial support for the two years they will be in the program ($12,000 / year) and will be prepared for graduate studies through a combination of faculty mentoring, group mentoring, and academic tutoring. Six faculty are involved in the program (Drs. Boissinot, Baker, Hickerson, and Swedell at Queens College and Prof. Tuaillon at Nassau Community College). Their research programs cover a wide-range of evolutionary and ecological questions and will provide a diverse choice of research projects that involve field work in Ethiopia, French Polynesia, and Mexico.

Students will benefit from an integrated research experience with a field component overseas in South Africa, Ethiopia, French Polynesia or Mexico and a cutting-edge laboratory component at Queens College. Possible research projects include behavioral ecology of potato beetles (in Mexico), speciation, phylogeography DNA barcoding of marine organisms (in French Polynesia), and social relationships of hamadryas baboons (in Ethiopia) or chacma baboons (in South Africa). The research experience will be combined with a rigorous and integrated academic program with field-related courses and workshops in ethics, career development and scientific communication.
Requirements:
- Students must be current Queens College students or will be Queens College students during the spring semester 2010.
- Students must have a B average in their introductory Biology (or Anthropology) courses.
