EECE
GRADUATE PROGRAMS - FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS
THE
EECE PROGRAMS
What
is the difference between the programs?
-
The
MS program is for those students who are already provisionally/initially
certified as an elementary or early childhood teacher. This is a 39-credit
program within which you can create a mini-specialization (12 credits) in
a certain area: Early Childhood; Children’s
Literature; Language & Literacy; Mathematics; Science; Instructional
Technology; Family & Community; or Education for Diverse Populations.
We also offer a bilingual extension (See Dr. Olivares).
-
The
MAT program is for those prospective students who have a bachelor’s
degree in an acceptable Liberal Arts/Science area other than Education and
now wish to become elementary teachers. They are eligible for initial certification
after the first 30 credits (which includes a student teaching placement)
and then complete the remaining credits. The initial certification
can be in either Early Childhood (Birth to Grade 2) or Elementary Education
(Grades 1-6). There is no mini-specialization in this program since
there are only 6 credits in electives. We also offer a bi-lingual extension.
-
The
Masters in Literacy (B-6) is a 39-credit program for those students
who are already NYS certified teachers and want to specialize in Literacy.
This is a very competitive program and seats are limited. It is a
3-year, 6-credits-per-semester, blocked program with 1 elective course which
can be taken at any time. Students are registered through the department. Applications are only accepted for the Fall semester and the deadline
for applications is April 1st.
-
The
Teaching Fellows program is run through the NYC Department of
Education in conjunction with Queens College (and other CUNY Colleges).
Inquiries into this program should be directed to The Department of Education.
What
is the difference between the Masters in Literacy and the Masters in Elementary
Education with a Language/Literacy Specialization?
The
Masters in Literacy certifies you as a Literacy Specialist and the Language/Literacy
Specialization is an area of concentration within the MS Elementary Education
Program.
ADMISSION
INTO THE PROGRAMS
What is the deadline for MS/MAT applications?
For the
Fall semester, the deadline is April 1st and for the Spring semester,
November 1st .
Where can I get a Graduate Bulletin and application?
The graduation
bulletin and the application can be found in the Office of Graduate Admissions,
Jefferson Hall Room 105.
How long does the application process take?
It takes approximately 2 months from the application
deadline before you are notified.
If I was denied entrance into the program, what can
I do?
If you were
denied the MAT program due to a large number of undergraduate course deficits,
you can take these courses as a non-matriculated student and register through
the appropriate undergraduate department. The Undergraduate Bulletin
and Schedule of Classes can be obtained at the Information Center in Jefferson
Hall. Upon completion, an official transcript should be submitted to the Department.
If I was accepted with deficiencies, when should I
take them?
All deficiencies should be completed within the first
12 months.
INITIAL
CERTIFICATION
When
do I take the tests and seminars required for certification?
The tests
and seminars can be taken at any time prior to applying for certification.
The Office of Continuing Education (Kiely Hall 111) offers the seminars a
few times throughout the year. Test Booklets and Certification Packets
can be obtained at the Office of Teacher Certification (Delaney Hall G10).
What
courses do I need to take prior to registering for student teaching?
You
should take the pedagogical core course, the ecological perspectives course,
2 language and literacy courses, the technology course and the curriculum
courses.
Are
there any other prerequisites to student teaching?
-
Prior to entering the classroom,
you should have documented 50 hours prior experience with children on
file in the department office. The 50-hour form can be picked up
in the department office and should be filled out and signed by your supervisor.
-
You will also need to pick
up a yellow medical form and have a TB test performed and your physician
will document the results on such form. The form needs to be returned
to the department prior to your student teaching experience. This
is a requirement of the NYC Department of Education.
What
about my student teaching placement?
The
Field Placement Director assigns you with a group of students and
a faculty supervisor to an established school site.
Does
the EECE Department handle my certification?
About
midway through the semester that you become eligible for certification, you
should go to the Teacher Certification Office in Delaney Hall
(G10) and pick up the certification packet that will have all relevant materials
for you to complete. Once your documentation is sent up to the
State, the Certification Office will send you a letter confirming that procedure.
The letter should be acceptable for you to use for potential interviews or
job fairs.
REGISTRATION
How
do I register for courses?
The Department
has set up a registration process on our department website http://www.qc.edu/EECE.
Letters are sent out prior to registration to advise students when to register
and each student is given a registration date and code to use in the process.
Two weeks after the registration period ends, students can go onto the College’s
registration website and/or call 718-606-1100 to check their registration.
How
many courses can I register for?
The Dean
of Graduate Studies permits students to enroll in no more than 12 credits
per semester due to the heavy workload of graduate courses. Any appeal
should be directed to the Dean of Graduate Studies.
Do
I need to speak with an advisor prior to registration?
It is
always recommended that you meet with an advisor at least once a year.
If you are unsure of which courses to take, advisors are available throughout
the semester and their office hours are posted throughout the department’s
offices.
How
many courses can I take with student teaching?
Because
of the heavy workload of the student teaching placement, the department has
determined that only 1 course should be taken with student teaching.
Can I take the two research courses in the same semester?
The Department
prefers that you take your first research course (EECE780) as early in the
program as possible, preferably within the first 12 credits. The final
research course (EECE781 or EECE 782) is the last course you take before graduating.
How
many courses can I take with the final research course?
Due
to the heavy workload of the final research course, the Department has determined
that only 1 additional course should be taken with it.
What
about overtallies? Due to classroom
size constraints, we do not permit them.
