MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING

Graduate Programs in Early Childhood & Elementary Education

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs prepare students for New York State Initial Certification in either Early Childhood (Birth-Grade 2) or Elementary Education (Grades 1-6). These programs are designed for students with undergraduate degrees in liberal arts and sciences. The 45 credit programs provide an introduction to basic pedagogy, curricula, and practice, with incremental field and research experiences, including student teaching, integrated into the coursework at each level.

Prerequisite to student teaching:
Documentation of 50 hrs. of structured experience with children.
Student Teaching (6 cr.) Student Teaching (6 cr.)
Upon completion of the above, students are eligible for NYS Initial Certificate, contingent upon passing the LAST, ATS-W and CST (multi-subject) exams and completing state-approved training seminars on: (1) child abuse, maltreatment and abduction; (2) substance abuse; (3) school violence; (4) school safety; and (5) fire and arson.

Upon completion of all 45 credits, students receive the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching. Following the subsequent satisfactory completion of a stipulated number of years in teaching, students are eligible for NYS Professional Certification.
