Dr. Rafael A. Olivares Dr. Rafael A. Olivares is an Associate Professor of Education at the Department of Elementary Education (EECE) at Queens College, City University of New York. At the Division of Education he is the Coordinator of the Master of Science Education with Bilingual Extension, the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) with Bilingual Extension, and the Advanced Certificate in Bilingual Extension. He holds several degrees in education and starts his career in Chile, South America where he taught at the elementary, secondary, and university levels. In USA, his work has been focused in Language Minority Education. In that area, he has the book "Using the Newspaper to Teach ESL Learners" and the special issue of the "International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism," Vol.5:1, 2002. In the same area he has several articles for bilingual teacher education such as "The Language and Content Connection in the Education of Limited English Proficient Students," "Using the Newspaper in the Bilingual Classroom," and "Communication in Mathematics for Students with Limited English Proficiency." In addition he has published the "NTC's Dictionary of Latin American Spanish," and other materials useful for teacher education. In 2008 he published his first novel of historical fiction "Ñusta y el Jardín del Sol." In this novel professor Olivares suggest a different vision of the invasion of the Inca Empire. Presently, he is working in the translation of this novel to English and doing research for his second one that will be related to life under dictators in Latin America.
