Educating the Non-Native Speaker of English: Theory and Research, 3 hr.; 3 cr.

This course examines the philosophy, rational and historical background of bilingual education. Participants discuss the programs, models, and trends while exploring the sociological and political aspects of bilingual education.

EECE 763

Teaching of Reading and Language Arts in Bilingual Education, 3 hr.; 3 cr.

This course discusses the characteristics of language arts in the mother tongue in the bilingual classroom. It also discusses the development and evaluation of literacy in the first language and the transfer of skills from one language to the other.

Learning the Content Areas in a Multilingual Setting: Teaching and Assessment, 3hr.; 3 cr.

This course focuses in the study, analysis, creation, and application of appropriate instructional strategies to teach the content areas to language minority students.

English Language Learning in the Bilingual Classroom: Theoretical Background, 3 hr.; 3 cr.

This course concentrates in theoretical approaches to the study of second language learning process in a bilingual classroom. It also explores aspects of second language acquisition and the factors involved in individual variations in achievements of children attending the bilingual classroom.

English Language Learning in the Bilingual Classroom: Pedagogical Applications, 3 hr.; 3 cr.

This course surveys the alternative teaching methodologies for the learning of English as a new language. Students analyze and apply classroom practices used in the field of second language learning.
