Teaching Social Studies in the Elementary School (3 credits)  

Students examine the New York and national standards in social studies education and their applications in actual classroom settings.   Document-based and inquiry-directed instruction is emphasized.

Culture and Education   (3 credits)

Students examine the interrelationship between culture, curriculum and instruction.   Explores how schools function as cultural agencies and is not limited to US Schools.   The course develops strategies to work successfully with the diversity of cultures in New York schools.

Conflict Resolution in Educational Settings (3 credits)

This course explores the origins and causes of conflict through the use of primary and secondary source documents and literature.   Various types of conflict resolution within a context of social justice are considered.   Students will apply these problem-solving models to diverse school settings.

Queens County as a Learning Laboratory   (3 credits)

Working with organizations, institutions, and historical sites within the borough of Queens, students investigate and reflect on teaching and learning strategies that incorporate community and personal history in their classrooms.   Emphasis is on historic, geographic, political, economic and social development.

Workshop for the Integration of Social Studies and Technology in the Elementary Classroom (3 credits)

This workshop assists students in designing web-based inquiry projects that integrate instructional technology with the social studies disciplines of history, geography, economics and political science.

Independent Study in Education

This course focuses on the use of current research in social studies education and the application of educational theory into pedagogical practice. Students are expected to produce an independent research project as a result of their work in this course.
