Frederick H. Buell
Specialist in American literature and culture, poetry, and world studies.

Professor of English; Director of American Studies

Present interests include literature and the environment; literature and technology (including pedagogic applications of computer technology for English); globalization and culture; immigrant literature.

Courses taught at Queens College include:
Environmental writing; technology and literature; American immigrant and ethnic literatures; world studies, ancient worlds; world studies, contemporary worlds; poetry workshops on all levels; advanced essay workshop; American literature surveys; the American dream in its global context; the long poem in America; introduction to American studies.

Author of two books of poetry (Theseus and Other Poems, Full Summer) and two books of criticism and cultural history (W.H. Auden as a Social Poet, National Culture and the New Global System), as well as numerous articles, essays, and poems.

Grants and Awards

  • Recipient of NEA, New York Foundation for the Arts, and ACLS grants
  • Director for FIPSE, Mellon, and NEH Summer Seminar grants
  • 1995 winner of the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching.
