Quote: My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.” –Wilfred Owen, Dulce et Decorum est.

"The topic of my paper is war and its effects on the environment, culture, and society.  It is broken up into three significant parts, where I delve into the very concept of war.  By trying to understand the meaning and reasons behind war, I continue on to how time and progress has come to redefine war. From the western civilization’s point of view, I branch out from Plato’s “just war” philosophy to WWI’s famous war novel by Erich Maria Remarque and poetry by Wilfred Owen to WWII-present, with Kenzaburo Oe’s anthology of Japanese short stories and contemporary filmmakers Peter Watkins and Alfonso Cuaron.  All of these literary figures and controversial filmmakers have deconstructed our past and current social issues to deal with the wars of their times or those possibly to come. The paper grapples with an enormous range of time and events in order to give a cohesive understanding of how war philosophy, tactics and diplomacy continue to develop and anticipate difficult futures for the world both environmentally and socially, on a very realistic level."
