The establishment of the Equity Studies Research Center at Queens College will promote interdisciplinary scholarship including basic and applied research and serve as a vehicle for community engagement facilitating the advancement and study of equity in urban education and socio-economic participation. The Center provides a focal point for intellectual exchange, collaboration, and coordination of resources necessary for achieving both theoretical understandings of equity processes and the effective design and implementation of practical interventions advancing equity. The Equity Studies Research Center brings together faculty from the Division of Education and the Divisions comprising the liberal arts and sciences to achieve these dual objectives and fosters community partnerships with the organizations and institutions in which equity is studied and advanced. The Center builds on the diverse expertise of the Queens College faculty studying equity, the established funding for their research, and the strong community relationships of the College to promote the advancement and study of equity.

The Center will incorporate and foster individual and interdisciplinary research between and within the Division of Education and the Divisions comprising the liberal arts and sciences dealing with issues of equity. These projects will support and enhance the efforts of the centerpiece programs to create a multidisciplinary approach to focusing on equity issues.

The ESCR is designed to create and examine on both a theoretical and practical level the avenues toward equitable academic and employment opportunities for urban youth. The Center will focus on four tangible activities:

•  The study of the context of educational avenues that promote equity by both theoretically and practically based research. This will include conducting and performing both interdisciplinary research and practically based initiatives that span all areas of education, the political, social, aesthetic, economic and historical contexts of what it means to succeed in an academically challenging environment. (Development and Implementation)

•  The development of innovative programs and their implementation in urban settings.

•  The conducting of professional development opportunities for teachers, parents and community members. This will include developing and implementing professional development opportunities that are founded upon research. (Education and Outreach)

•  The dissemination of the efforts of the Center on a local, regional and national level. This will include hosting local, regional, and national conferences/seminars; disseminating developed materials including research notes and briefs and refereed and non-refereed articles; presenting at conferences at all levels and replicating efforts nationwide. (Dissemination)

The establishment of the Equity Studies Research Center is based upon the widely acknowledged research accomplishments, potential to expand the programmatic research to the New York City area, and potential to foster interdisciplinary research. The establishment of the Center will provide coordination of activities and stimulate collective research. The Center's focus on equity bridges all of study when contemplating the entire framework of education. The Center will take into account the educational, political, social, aesthetic, economic, and historical context of what it means to succeed in an academically challenging environment. It will thus provide an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the entire framework of educational success.
