APPEALING A GRADE
The following procedure has been established for a student who wishes
to appeal an earned grade:
1. First discuss the grade with the instructor.
2. If dissatisfied, discuss the grade with the Dietetics
Program Director (Prof. Patricia Miner), then, if necessary, the Deputy Chair (Prof. Susan Braverman), and if needed, the Department Chair (Dr. Elizabeth Lowe).
3. If the matter is still not resolved, make an appointment
with the Divisional Dean (Dr. Thomas Strekas).
4. After the above three steps have been exhausted, the
Undergraduate Scholastic Standards Committee can be contacted for a formal
appeal. Additional information can be obtained at the Committee’s

A CAREER AS A DIETITIAN
A. What is ADA ?
The American Dietetic Association (ADA) is the national professional
organization of dietitians and nutritionists
B. What is a Registered Dietitian?
A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a person who has
1) completed the Didactic Program in Dietetics
2) completed a Dietetic Internship
3) passed the Registerd Dietitian Exam
1. DIDACTIC PROGRAM IN DIETETICS (DPD)
a) completion of the Didactic Program in Dietetics with
a grade of C or better
in all courses listed on page 1.
b) a minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree.
A Verification Statement will be issued at the completion of a and b,
which is in effect for 5 years.
2. DIETETIC INTERNSHIP (DI)
A Dietetic Internship (DI) is a post-baccalaureate supervised learning
experience of at least 900 practice hours. These are highly competitive
and field work is suggested. Go to the ADA website www.eatright.org for
a list of all of the DIs in the USA.
3. REGISTERED DIETITIAN (RD)
After completion of the DPD and DI, you may apply
to take the national registration examination from the Commission on Dietetic
Registration (CDR). When you pass the examination you may then use the
initials RD after your name. Once you pass the Registration Examination
you may also apply to the NY State Education Department for Certification
as a Dietitian/Nutritionist (CDN).
Is it necessary to be Registered?
Jobs can be obtained by persons who are not registered, but they are
more difficult to find - the salary level is lower and the chances of
advancement are less.
C. What are the steps to ADA membership?
l. As a full time student you may become a student member.(See
posters in FNES Office and get application form. Check off DPD for type of program.)
Membership is June 1 to May 31.
2.When you have completed both the academic (DPD) and
practice requirements (DI), or academic requirements and a Master's Degree
from a regionally accredited college or university, you are eligible for
active membership.

THE QUEENS COLLEGE DIDACTIC
PROGRAM IN DIETETICS
The Queens College Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) enables students
to complete the academic requirements needed to enter a post-baccalaureate
Dietetic Internship (DI). Upon successful completion of a DI the student
is eligible to sit for the Registered Dietitian (RD) exam. The Queens
College DPD was granted Developmental Accreditation status on June 18,
2002 by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE),
120 S. Riverside Plaza, Chicago IL 60606 (phone # (312) 899-5400).

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND OTHER INFORMATION
Admission requirements, costs, the academic calendar, schedule of classes,
graduation requirements, and other policies and procedures, can be found
in the Queens College 2003-2005 Undergraduate Bulletin and on the Queens
College website http://www.qc.cuny.edu.
VERIFICATION
Upon completion of all ADA courses and achievement of the B.A. Degree,
students may request a Verification Statement from the Didactic Program
Director. An original, signed, Verification Statement must be included
in each Dietetic Internship application packet. Students who entered Queens
College in the Fall 1992 semester, or thereafter, must achieve a 2.0 index
in the major to be eligible for verification. In order to be verified
after graduation, students must submit a student copy of their transcripts
to the DPD Director along with the appropriate form. Any grade below C

COMPUTER MATCHING
Computer matching is one part of the process necessary to obtain a DI
appointment. ADA has contracted with D&D Digital Systems to facilitate
matching through a computerized process. An applicant is matched with
the highest ranked program that offers the applicant a position. Computer
matching uses the applicant’s prioritized list and the programs’
prioritized lists until all possible matches are complete. There is a
fee for computer matching that must be submitted at the time the student
submits the mark/sense card to D&D Digital Systems. For more information
see www.eatright.org
and www.dnddigital.com.
