Did You Know...?

  • According to the 1990 census, in the borough of Queens alone, 44% of the population reported to be speakers of languages other than English.

The languages reported include (in order of number of speakers):

1. Spanish
2. Chinese
3. Italian
4. Korean
5. Greek
6. Indic

7. French
8. French Creole
9. German
10. Tagalog
11. Polish
12. Russian

13. Yiddish
14. Arabic
15. Portuguese
16. Portuguese Creole

20. Scandinavian languages
21. Native North American languages
22. Mon-Khmer

All of the languages in red are taught at least at one of the Queens LOTE Consortium sites.

Why study a language other than English?

  • It will increase your employment opportunities and salary potential.

  • It will provide you with skills to interact with a greater range of people from different cultures.

  • It will enhance your critical thinking skills and improve your metalinguistic awareness.  

Language requirements in the Queens LOTE Consortium

(The information here is unofficial.  Check with the college's Registrar or look in the current college's bulletin for official information.)

  • Queens College: three semesters (see the current QC bulletin or click here); some majors may have special requirements

  • York College: two semesters (see the current York bulletin) 

  • Queensborough Community College: one or two semesters (see the current QCC bulletin)

  • LaGuardia Community College: no college-wide requirement, but requirements for particular majors
