Books
CUNY+
You can search in CUNY+ for Queens College only, any other CUNY library, or all of them together. Use the Title Request feature to send books here from other CUNY libraries.
Reference Works
Browse the subject headings to find reference works on your author, or use the Subject Heading Keyword search to go straight to the relevant works.
Most subject headings have subheadings like “dictionaries,” “encyclopedias” and so forth.
Example: A subject keyword search for “Milton dictionaries” would find books with the subject heading “Milton, John, 1608–1674—Dictionaries, indexes, etc”. This is easier than trying to guess the exact subject heading.
Criticism
“Criticism and interpretation” is another common subheading, or you may wish to browse for subject headings that cover your topic more specifically. Keyword searching is also useful here.
Articles
Start at the library's database page. On the left, there is an option to sort by subject. From there, you can choose “English” in the drop-down menu.
MLA International Bibliography
The MLA International Bibliography is most comprehensive database of quality scholarly articles in literature and related fields, and easier to search than many others
Make sure you search MLA Bibliography and not the Literature Resource Center—they share an interface.
Supports searching fields such as “Author as Subject” and “Literary Theme” in addition to standard fields like author and title
Use the Find It button to access full text, electronically or in print.
Other Databases
Project Muse provides access to a large amount of material not found elsewhere electronically and offers browsable indexes of subject headings.
JSTOR offers archival access to older issues of journals in all disciplines but is difficult to search because of limited field searching capabilities.
