New Immigrants Video Collection
Through a generous gift the Friends of the Queens College Library, the Media Center has acquired a collection of videocassettes dedicated to the study of those who have emigrated to the United States within the past twenty years. We have titles on immigrants from all over the world, most notably from Latin America and Asia. The following is a list of current titles:
- 7 Train (HE4491 .N7 S4 1999)
- A glimpse of the passengers that ride the #7 subway that runs from Flushing to Times Square and carries 500,000 people from 117 countries.
- Between Two Worlds (E184 .06 B49 1998)
Examines the difficulties experienced by first generation Asian American youth who struggle with living in two worlds—the Asian family culture and the American culture. Six young Asian Americans, mostly Korean Americans and all children of immigrants, are interviewed. They discuss a cultural gap between them and their more traditional parents, who disapprove of their assimilation into American culture.- Between Worlds (E184 .V53 B4 1999)
Portrays the struggles of several Vietnamese Amerasians and their families who left Vietnam in 1992 and how they created new lives for themselves in America. The film follows their stay in a refugee camp in the Philippines for six months before settling in the U.S. After they arrive the film documents their struggles for five more years as they learn English, find jobs, and pursue their educations.- Black and White in Exile (two cassettes, E184 .C97 B63 1997)
- Chronicles thirty years of Caribbean exile in the United States, focusing on Cubans and Haitians.
- Central Americans (E184 .C34 C46 1993)
- Covers the poverty, political unrest, and oppression that compelled many Central Americans to emigrate to the United States.
- La Ciudad (PN1995.9 .I4 C58 1999)
- Shot on location entirely in Queens, this film follows the difficult lives of four Latino immigrants in New York City.
- Cuban Roots (E184 .C97 C827 2000)
- Highlights the journey of a black Cuban family who emigrated from Cuba to the Bronx in 1962.
- Desi: South Asians in New York (E184 .S69 D4 2000)
- Part of WNET's Ethnic American Series, presents first- and second-generation Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans, and other South Asians who have become an integral part of the city.
- Desounen: Dialogue with Death (F1916 .D47 2001)
- Interviews with Haitians concerning the years of economic and political chaos in Haiti that led to a mass exodus of Haitians to the United States.
- Displaced in the New South (E184 .S75 D5 1995)
Explores the immigration explosion in Georgia and follows the cultural collision of Asian and Hispanic communities. In 1980 there were a few thousand Asian and Latino immigrants in Georgia. By 1994 there were more than 300,000. This documentary is a case study of a national trend: waves of immigrants, mostly from Asia and Latin America, coming to urban and suburban commmunities that have never experienced this before.- Dominican American Spirit (E184 .D6 D65 1999)
- Part of WNET's Ethnic American Series, focuses on the largest foreign-born ethnic group in New York City.
- Dosvedanya Means Goodbye (DS135 .R92 D67 1990)
- Follows Tamara Okun, a Russian Jew who waited eight years to receive her exit visa, and her family's journey from Leningrad to Vienna to Washington, DC.
- Go Back to Mexico (HV6920 .G63)
- A PBS Frontline documentary chronicling the public opposition to illegal immigration, particularly in California from Mexico.
- Harmony and Spirit: Chinese Americans in New York (E184 .C5 H37 2001)
- Part of WNET's Ethnic American Series, explores Manhattan's Chinatown and how it spawned new Chinatowns in Flushing and Sunset Park.
- High School of American Dreams (LD7501 .N5155 H544 1994)
- Introduces the International High School, a public high school in Queens, where immigrants from 43 countries are part of a multicultural learning environment.
- Home Is Struggle (1991)
- Explores the lives of women who have immigrated to the United States from different Latin American countries for different economic and political reasons.
- Kababayan: Filipino-Americans in New York (E184 .F4 K22 2000)
- Part of WNET's Ethnic American Series, spans several generations of Filipino-American culture.
- Korean-American Spirit (E184 .K6 K574 1999)
- Part of WNET's Ethnic American Series, offers an overview of the obstacles experienced by first-generation Korean immigrants.
- Postville (F630 .I5 P67 2001)
- Postville, Iowa is where more than 300 Hasidic Jews and hundreds of Mexicans have taken up residence in the last decade. This program explores the struggles and rewards of the social and economic changes.
- Taxi Dreams (HD8039 .T162 N44)
- Features five immigrants who are trying to make a living driving taxis in New York City.
- Tales from Arab Detroit (E184 .A65 T354 1995)
Chronicles the ways an Arab American community weaves new traditions with the threads of the old when it brings in an Egyptian poet to perform the 1,000 year-old Bani Hilal epic. Three generations of Arab-Americans, from immigrants to their native born children, discuss changing social and cultural values. Storytellers old and new, from debkeh dancers to a hip-hop artists, demonstrate the paradoxical ways a community blends new traditions with older ones.- They Came From Russia (E184 .R9 T4 1998)
- Professor Dmitri Urnov of Nassau Community College gives many case histories of immigrants from the former Soviet Union, and recounts the accomplishments and inventions of Russians in America.
