Mission statement

The Mission of the Office of Minority Affairs & Pre-Professional Advisement is to nurture, retain and graduate most of the College’s Under-represented Minority students (URM):African/Black American, Latino Hispanic Students and other students who so identify.

The Office of Minority Affairs & Pre-Professional advisement serves as a bridge between URM students and the College. Collaborative work with various constituencies at the College enhances service delivery to, and promotes the energy, determination and success of the College’s URM students.


Goals:
  • To create an atmosphere of safety, high expectations, and affirmation for URM students

  • To connect or reconnect URM students to the larger College and help boost their self confidence and expectation of success at the College by providing programs that address their aspirations, challenges and issues.

  • To effectively address the problematic issues which minimize the number of URM students who pursue and successfully complete curricular requirements for acceptance into professional and graduate schools, particularly in the areas of science, math and computer science ( go to SOMS link).

  • To facilitate the continuous existence of a cadre of URM students who are contributing and leading members of the College community.
Services:
  • Counseling /workshops on the importance of high academic performance and personal presentation for success at the College and in the larger society.

  • Developing for each URM student an individualized educational plan (academically strengthening activities, service learning opportunities, internships etc) that will result in a satisfying College experience in and out of the classroom and in the realization of the student’s professional goals.

  • Support groups to promote the development of students’ personal, academic and professional identity.

  • Assistance for students in academic distress

  • Mentorship from Upper level students

  • Nomination for scholarships, enrichment program, competitive academic, programs, internships etc.

  • Coaching throughout the preparation and application process for professional/graduate schools or direct entry into the labor force following graduation.

  • Access to recruiters and on-site visit to professional and graduate schools.

  • A limited loan library of resources designed to stimulate and enable students’ academic success.
