Research Description:

Input to the visual system is inherently 2-dimensional, and yet we are able to effortlessly perceive the 3-dimensionality of objects around us, even in the absence of binocular vision. We use psychophysical techniques and computer simulations, guided by current knowledge of visual system physiology, to understand how we perceive 3-dimensionality from 2-D retinal images. We have particular interest in understanding how the visual system uses changes in surface texture in the retinal image to accomplish this feat. Our goals are to quantify the 2-D information that is required for correct 3-D shape perception, and to determine how this information may be neurally extracted.
