Professional Activities:
Dr. Stevens is primarily engaged in private practice and teaching. She has been with Queens College since 1992, first as a student then as an adjunct since 1999. Dr. Stevens also is part of the NYC DOH Medical Reserve Corp and volunteers clinical time for returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. A practicing clinician with a psychodynamic orientation she is skilled in assessment, diagnosis and treatment for a wide variety of disorders and is trained in various other modalities of treatment. Although in private practice now, Dr. Stevens has trained within the NYS Mental Hospital System dealing with several populations including the severe and chronicly mentally ill as well as forensic and criminal populations.
Research Description:
Dr. Stevens dissertation was focused on single welfare mothers being forced to transit to work under welfare guidelines, mental health, coping processes and how these factors interacted with the capacity to obtain work or not. She studied their mental health profile including diagnosisng key pathologies, ie depression, paranoia and anxiety as well as coping processes (problem focused vs emotion focused).One of the most important results of the study reinforce that obtaining employment helps to alleviate pathology.
