10/24/07

Adelphi University blanked Queens College, 2-0, in an ECC match played on Wednesday in New Hyde Park. Valentina Duque made 10 saves for Queens in a loss that dropped them to 5-10-2 overall and 3-5-1 in league play.

Adelphi opened the scoring in the ninth minute when a corner kick resulted in a goal by Elise Maniguet. The score remained at 1-0 until the 50th minute when Lauren Slattery of AU scored off of an assist from Brianne McDonnell to close out the scoring.

Diana Redman's goal in the 88th minute was the difference as the Lady Knights rallied to defeat New York Tech, 2-1, in Flushing on Senior Day. Jennifer Robbins had tied things up for Queens just four minutes earlier.

After the two sides played a scoreless first half Mona Lekaj took a corner from Stephanie Bradbury, did a 180 at the top of the box, and put a shot off the post and past QC goaltender Valentina Duque to give NYIT the lead. The score remained at 1-0 until Jenna Peveraro threaded the needle with a free kick to Jennifer Robbins at the left post who put it in for the game tying tally at 82:45. This set the stage for senior Diana Redman, who capped a nice run by scoring the game winner with a left footer into the lower left corner with just under two minutes remaining in the match.

The win gives Queens an overall record of 5-9-2 and a conference record of 3-4-1 while NYIT falls to 5-12 and 2-7.

Queens College was beaten by 22nd ranked C.W. Post, 3-0, in Greenvale , New York on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Knights, 4-9-2 overall and 2-4-1 in ECC play, were held to only two shots by Post (12-1-2, 7-1-0 ECC).

The game remained scoreless until the 44th minute when Samantha Barbero of CWP took a cross from Danielle DeLuca and put a shot from five yards out past Lady Knight's goalkeeper Valentina Duque, who made six saves for QC in the match.

Post added an insurance goal at the 51:54 mark to increase their lead to 2-0. Lindsay Nick shot went off of the crossbar to the left side of the net where Ivana Babic put it in from five yards out. Twenty six minutes later DeLuca closed out the scoring when she took a pass from Maria Sonnenberg and deposited the ball into the cage from ten yards out.

One hundred and ten minutes on the field couldn't settle matters as the Lady Knights and St. Thomas Aquinas battled to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday afternoon on the pitch in Flushing. Katie Mermelstein scored Queens College's only goal for the second consecutive game.

A Jenna Peveraro free kick enabled Queens to take a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when her shot glanced off of STAC goalkeeper Jeanette Gibson, struck the crossbar, and fell at the feet of Mermelstein who banged it home. Melissa Cuartas had a golden opportunity in the 67th minutes to give QC an insurance goal but she missed a wide open net. That opened the door for STAC's Nicole Sticiuk, who blasted one in from 35 yards out to tie the game at one with just over 20 minutes left in regulation.

Queens had three great chances to score the golden goal in the second overtime but were stymied by Gibson. In minute 103 she made a save off of a Mermelstein header in the box. Two minutes later she stopped Dena Zornberg from 10 yards out and in the 107th minute beat Laura D'Amore to a loose ball to make a game-saving stop. STAC had the final chance of the game but Kimberley Griffith just missed the upper left hand corner with 11 second remaining.

Queens is now 4-8-2 overall and 2-3-1 in ECC play while STAC is 3-12-1 and 1-6-1.

Katie Mermelstein scored the Lady Knights' only goal in a 4-1 loss at Georgian Court University on Saturday afternoon. Queens drops to 4-8-1 while Georgian Court is now 11-6 after the non-conference tilt.

Mermelstein's goal, her first in the collegiate ranks, gave Queens a short lived 1-0 lead at the 11:28 mark. GCU responded six minutes later by tying things up with a goal from Nicole Mateyka. The home town team then took the lead for good in the 43rd minute on the first of two goals on the day by Dana DePalma.

Valentina Duque made a season high 16 saves for Queens in a losing effort.

Laura D'Amore scored an unassisted goal in the 90th minute to give Queens College a 1-0 victory over East Coast Conference rival Mercy College on Saturday in Dobbs Ferry. The Lady Knights have now won three of their last five matches with D'Amore scoring the game winning goal in two of them.

D'Amore took advantage of a Mercy defensive miscue, went around goalkeeper Megam McKim, and scored the game's only goal with 23 ticks left on the clock to give her team the win. Valentina Duque made two saves in picking up the shutout for the Lady Knights, her fourth of 2007.

Queens, who outshot Mercy 14 to 3 for the game, improved to 4-7-1 overall and 2-3 in conference play with the win. Mercy is now winless in five tries, all ECC games.

Wilmington used four second half goals to defeat the Lady Knights, 4-1, in Flushing on Wednesday afternoon. Melissa Cuartas scored her second goal of the season for Queens in the loss.

Cuartas took a nice diagonal pass from Alicia Ezat and scored in the final moments of the first half to give Queens a 1-0 lead. Eighteen minutes after the two teams took the field for the second half Ashli Gerlach's throw in was deposited behind Lady Knights' goalkeeper Valentina Duque, knotting the game at one apiece. Wilmington took the lead for good in the 72nd minute on a goal by Begun Malali and went on to add two more as insurance, one from Heather DiBlasi and another from Malali, to wrap up the scoring for the day.

With the loss Queens drops to 3-7-1 while Wilmington improves to 10-3 in a non-conference match-up.

Nyack College blanked Queens College, 1-0, in a non-conference game played on Monday in Flushing. Nicole Keiser scored early in the first half and Nyack made that goal hold up in improving to 5-7 on the season. The loss ends the Lady Knights (3-6-1) modest win streak at two games.

Keiser took a pass from Alisha Smith, deked past a Queens defender and put a low shot inside the left post from 25 yards out in the 17th minute to put Nyack ahead 1-0. Queens pressed Nyack in the second half, holding a territorial edge for the entire 45 minutes and outshooting their opponents 16 to 2. Queens would finish the match outshooting Nyack by a 30 to 7 margin. Whitney Shutt made eight of her 13 saves in the second half and recorded the shutout victory. Diana Redman led the Lady Knights' offense by registering eight shots.

Laura D'Amore's first goal as a Lady Knight proved to be the golden goal in a Queens College 1-0 overtime win over Molloy College in an ECC match played on Tuesday afternoon in Flushing. Lady Knights goalkeeper Valentina Duque made 10 saves in posting her second consecutive shutout victory.

D'Amore took a cross from Jennifer Robbins at the 4:30 mark of the 1st overtime and headed the ball past Molloy goalie Christina Aquilon and inside the left post for the game winner. Aquilon made nine saves for Molloy in a losing effort. Queens is now 1-3 in ECC play and 3-5-1 overall while Molloy drops to 3-6-1 and 1-2.

Jenna Peveraro scored early in the second half to ignite a four goal explosion as the Lady Knights beat Caldwell College, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon in Caldwell, New Jersey. With the non-conference win, Queens improves to 2-5-1 while Caldwell drops to 2-5.

Peveraro converted on a penalty kick for Queens for the first goal of the contest at the 66:53 mark. Less than eight minutes later, Diana Redman picked up a loose ball at the top of the box and scored to put QC up 2-0. Freshman Caitlin O'Connell then provided some breathing room for the Lady Knights, scoring the first two goals of her collegiate career at 82:25 and 85:17.

Valentina Duque made four saves for Queens in recording her second shutout of 2007 and the fourth of her career.

The Lady Knights were shut out by Dowling College, 4-0, in East Coast Conference action in Flushing on Wednesday afternoon. Vanessa Moreira scored three times and assisted on another to lead Dowling.

Moreira scored twice in a four minute span starting in the sixteenth minute to put Dowling ahead 2-0. The score remained that way until the 85th minute when Brianna Falese headed a Moreira corner kick past Queens goalkeeper Valentina Duque to put Dowling ahead 3-0. Moreira completed her hat trick less than three minutes later when Duque got a piece of her point blank shot but the momentum of the ball carried it into the net. Duque made six saves for Queens in a losing effort.

9/16/07

Madeline Godman scored her first of the season but it wasn't enough to prevent the Lady Knights from dropping a 2-1 decision to the University of New Haven on Saturday in Flushing. Amy Desmarais' goal for UNH in the 76th minute was the difference as it broke a 1-1 tie.

Holly Dawson opened the scoring for UNH when she picked up a loose ball in the box and deposited it into the empty net 12 minutes in. Queens rallied to tie the match seven minutes later when Godman took a feed from Laura D'Amore and beat UNH goalkeeper Kelly Schindler with a floater into the top right hand corner of the cage.

New Haven pressed the issue in the second half, out-shooting QC 15-4 in the process before Desmarais scored what proved to be the game winner with less than fifteen minutes remaining. Goalkeeper Valentina Duque kept the Lady Knights close by making 12 saves.

Erin Conrod scored with just under nine minutes left in the match to break a 1-1 tie and give Southern Connecticut State University a 2-1 victory over Queens College on Tuesday afternoon in Flushing. The goal was Conrod's second of the game and lifted SCSU to 3-2-1 on the season while dropping the Lady Knights to 1-3-1.

Conrod gave SCSU the lead 21:49 into the match off a cross from Gina DellaRose. The score remained at 1-0 until Diana Redman placed a nifty left footed shot into the lower right hand corner of the net to pull the Lady Knights even at the 59:40 mark. With the game looking like it was heading into overtime. Conrod once again converted a pass from DellaRose to score the game winner at 80:21.

Valentina Duque made six saves for Queens while her counterpart, Katie Didio, made four stops in net for SCSU.

Bridgeport broke a scoreless tie with three goals in an eight minute span on their way to a 5-1 win over the Lady Knights in East Coast Conference action on Sunday in Connecticut. Andrea Slavin scored for Queens, her fifth of the season and fifth in her last three games.

Linda Velaj got UB going with a goal off a corner kick in the 33rd minute. Teammates Antonia Johansson and Danielle Deschene then followed with goals to put Bridgeport ahead 3-0 after 41 minutes of action.

Slavin scored off of an assist from Laura D'Amore at 49:07 to get the Lady Knights back in the match but UB held QC at bay until adding insurance markers in the 85th and 87th minutes to take the match, 5-1.

The Lady Knights had the upper hand for 110 minutes but came away with just a 2-2 tie against Felician College in a non-conference match played in Flushing on Wednesday afternoon. For the second consecutive game freshman Andrea Slavin netted a pair for Queens.

Slavin's first goal came in the game's seventh minute off assists from Katie Mermelstein and Madeline Godman. She struck again just three and a half minutes later, scoring after blocking a Felician attempt of a pass and outrunning everyone to the net for a breakaway goal.

Felician inched closer with just under five minutes left in the first half when Tiffany Bledsoe scored after D.J. Jacobwitz hit the right post with a shot. Goalkeeper Amanda Musarra, who finished with 22 saves, made several point blank stops to keep her team close before Jacobwitz notted the score in the 73rd minute.

Queens had a golden opportunity two minutes into the first overtime when a hand ball in the box resulted in a penalty kick for Jenna Peveraro. Unfortunately for QC, Peveraro's shot missed the left post by inches and the game ended in a draw.

Andrea Slavin and Jennifer Robbins scored two goals apiece as the Lady Knights defeated Bloomfield College, 9-0 in Flushing on Friday afternoon. The nine goals is the most by a Lady Knights' team since October 6, 2004 when Queens beat Concordia College 10-0.

Queens took a 7-0 lead after 45 minutes on goals by seven different players. Christina Salomen opened the scoring just 2:37 into the game by putting a shot in the top right corner of the net. Defenders Catherine Galiano and Jenna Peveraro then followed with goals and QC was on their way to an easy victory.

Valentina Duque made three saves Queens in recording a shut out victory.

The opening of the Lady Knights' 2007 season was an unsuccessful one as they lost to Bentley College, 2-0, in Waltham, Massachussets on Saturday afternoon. Cheryl Boyd's penalty kick goal 12:41 into the match was the difference as Bentley won for the second time in two tries in 2007.

Queens trailed 1-0 after 45 minutes despite outshooting their hosts 6 to 4. Tara Petitto gave Bentley a two goal cushion in the 48th minute as her team carried the play in the second half, outshooting QC 12 to 7. Valentina Duque made three saves for the Lady Knights while four players, Andrea Slavin, Jenna Peveraro, Laura D'Amore and Dena Zornberg, each had two shots for Queens.

NYIT used a goal late in each half to defeat the Lady Knights, 2-0, in Plainview, New York on Wednesday afternoon. The loss brings the 2006 Queens College Women's Soccer season to a close.

Diana Cotilletta gave Tech a 1-0 lead with a 20 footer over the head of Queens goalkeeper Valentina Duque in the 44th minute. The score remained that way until Krista Yulfo provided some breathing room for New York Tech with a goal in the 81st minute to make the score 2-0. Duque made eight saves for QC in their season ending loss.

10/18/06

Diana Redman scored a goal in each half to lead the Lady Knights past Concordia College, 3-0, in an East Coast Conference game played in Flushing on Wednesday. Cheryl Meaney had the othe goal for Queens in the last home game on the Queens College schedule.

Redman opened the scoring with her 10th of the season in the 27th minute. She later added an insurance goal in the 70th minute before Meaney, who had an assist on Redman's first goal, closed out the scoring two minutes later.

C.W. Post scored once in each half in defeating Queens, 2-0, in Flushing on a rainy Wednesday afternoon. Valentina Duque made 12 saves for QC in the loss.

Nicole Dabe of Post used her head to score in the 42nd minute to help the visitors grab a 1-0 lead. Arianna Rett provided Post with insurance in the 76th minute when she deposited the rebound of a Dabe shot into the net.

10/9/06

Cheryl Meaney had a goal and an assist but it wasn't enough as the Lady Knights fell to Caldwell College, 3-2, in Flushing on Columbus Day. Queens lost despite outshooting their opponents 21-16.

Meaney opened the scoring when her corner kick hit off the far post and a defender before crossing the goal line in the game's 14th minute. Caldwell responded with a goal just two minutes later and added another in the 32nd minute to take a 2-1 lead into the second half.

Catherine Galiano tied the game at two when Meaney's free kick caromed off of the crossbar right to her with an open net staring her in the face. However, Caldwell's Kristie Paknis snuck a shot inside the left post in the 72nd minute to win the game for the visitors.

10/7/06

St. Thomas Aquinas College defeated the Lady Knights, 3-0, in Theiss, New York on Saturday afternoon. The loss was QC's third straight, all against East Coast Conference opponents.

Kimberly Griffith led STAC with two goals and an assist. She assisted on the first goal of the game scored by Katie Pulzone in the 36th minute. Griffith then scored in the 43rd and 62nd minutes to complete the scoring for the game. Kaitlin Purcell had a team high five shots for Queens.

10/4/06

Adelphi scored all of their goals in the first half in defeating the Lady Knights, 5-0, in Flushing on Wednesday afternoon. Tara Grodotzke scored twice and Christine Conway had a shutout for the winning side.

The Lady Knights two best scoring chances came off of the foot of senior Diana Redman. In the 54th minute Redman rang one of off the right post and seven minutes later she clanged one off of the crossbar.

The University of Bridgeport defeated the Lady Knights 3-1 in an ECC game played in Flushing on Saturday afternoon. Cheryl Meaney scored her third goal of the season for Queens in the loss.

Meaney scored off of a free kick after touches by Kaitlin Purcell and Jessica Schacor to give Queens a 1-0 lead. Sofia Hoflin tied the score with the first of her two goals when she headed a corner kick past Lady Knights' goalkeeper Valentina Duque in the 26th minute. Therese Petersson scored what proved to be the game winner 10 minutes later before Hoflin's second goal provided insurance in the 39th minute.

Diana Redman scored twice in the last six minutes of the game to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1, Queens College victory over Mercy College in Flushing on Wednesday. Redman now has scored eight goals in her last three games and nine in her last five.

Lindsey LeVasseur scored in the 25th minute to give Mercy a 1-0 lead, a lead which they would hold until the 84th minute when Redman tied the score with Queens playing a man up due to an injury to Mercy's Samantha LaBella. Then, with under a minute to go, Redman chipped the ball over the head of goalkeeper Becky Pelow and outran several Mercy defenders to the ball before tapping it into an empty net for the game winner.

New Hyde Park native Diana Redman blitzed Bloomfield College to the tune of four goals and two assists to lead the Lady Knights to a 6-2 win in non-conference action on Monday. Alicia Ezat and Cheryl Meaney were the other goal scorers for the visitors from Flushing, who out-shot Bloomfield 26-9.

The first two of Redman's goals opened the scoring and, when Alicia Ezat scored, QC led 3-0 just nine minutes into the match. The first half ended with the Lady Knights comfortably ahead, 4-1, with Redman scoring three of the four and assisting on the other. Redman and Meaney each added a goal in the second half to close out the scoring for Queens.

Diana Redman scored two goals and Adriana Giampapa added one of her own as the Lady Knights battled Dowling College to a 3-3 tie in ECC action on Saturday in Oakdale, New York. Queens earned the tie despite being out-shot 19 to 5 by their hosts.

Redman opened the scoring in the 24th minute and then scored on a breakaway in the 33rd minute to extend QC's lead to 2-0. Giampapa's goal put Queens up 3-1 in the 56th minute but Dowling's Briana Falese tallied twice - the second coming with less than 10 minutes to go in the game - to deadlock the game at 3 apiece.

Molloy College scored a goal in each half to defeat the Lady Knights, 2-0, in Rockville Centre on Saturday. Valentina Duque made a season high 12 saves for Queens in their loss.

Erin But scored in the 23rd minute to give Molloy a 1-0 lead. The score remained that way until the 89th minute when Molloy got an insurance goal from Colleen Norcott. Diana Redman had all five of QC's shots as they saw their record in conference drop to 0-2.

9/11/06

Midfielder Diana Redman scored one goal and assisted on another to help Queens defeat Felician College 3-0 under the lights in Rutherford, New Jersey on Monday. With the win Queens improves to 1-2 in 2006.

Jennifer Robbins opened the scoring in the 42nd minute off an assist from Jean Fiorello. The score remained 1-0 until Cheryl Meaney tallied in the 65th minute with an assist going to Redman, who scored the game's final goal 18 minutes later. Goalkeeper Valentina Duque earned her first collegiate shutout by making six saves.

The Lady Knights battled Bentley College and the elements in their 2006 season opener but came up a bit short, losing 1-0. Cheryl Boyd of Bentley scored in the 83rd minute and Sara Resler made eight saves to help the visitors improve to 2-0.

Valentina Duque made seven saves in her QC debut in net. Jennifer Robbins and Diana Redman each recorded three shots for Queens in the loss.

Dowling College scored goals five minutes apart midway through the first half to open up a 2-0 lead en route to a 4-2 decision over Queens in the opening round of the ECAC Division II Championships hosted by New Jersey Tech.The game was delayed for an hour and a half with 30 minutes left in the second half due to a thunderstorm.

Jennifer Robbins scored her third of the season off of an assist from Joanne Hammel in the 29th minute to pull the Lady Knights within one at 2-1 but Dowling responded with just 1:30 left to regain their two goal edge. Hammel added her ninth of the year to make the score 4-2 after the rain delay but Queens could get no closer.
