Laura Mocodeanu and Kirby Reiss were winners in singles and doubles but the Lady Knights fell to Bloomsburg University, 5-3, in the NCAA Division II East Regionals on Thursday in Bloomsburg. The Lady Knights wrap up the 2007-2008 season with a record of 12-9.

Mocodeanu and Reiss got QC on the board with a 8-4 win at second doubles but Bloomsburg won the other two doubles contests to tak a 2-1 lead into singles competition. Mocodeanu beat Torie Cunningham, 6-1 and 6-0 at second singles while Reiss posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Brittani Weeks at #4 singles for the Lady Knights only other points of the day as BU took #1, #3 and #6 singles to clinch the win.

Franklin Clinches Lady Knights' Sixth Straight ECC Title

Queens College captured the East Coast Conference Women's Tennis Championship by beating Concordia College, 5-2, in Flushing on Thursday. Jess Franklin clinched it for QC with a 7-5, 6-0 win in singles action.

The victory not only gives the Lady Knights their six straight conference championship but it also earns them an automatic bid to the 2008 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships. which will be played in May of 2008.

Queens took an early 2-1 lead with wins at second and third doubles. Laura Mocodeanu and Kirby Reiss won their second doubles match 8-0 while Jen Merideth and Maria Perevezentseva combined for an 8-4 win at third doubles.

Reiss and Perevezentseva joined Franklin as winners in singles to give Queens College the championship.

Bryant Bounces Queens from the NCAA Regionals

Bryant University defeated Queens, 5-3, on Friday at California, Pa. in the first round of the NCAA Regional Women’s Tennis Tournament.

Michelle Burke and Lauren Mullen led the Bulldogs to an 8-4 doubles win to start the match. Burke also won her singles match defeating Jessie Franklin, 7-6 (3), 6-2.

In the #1 doubles match the Lady Knights' tandem of Dominika Bajuk and Alyssa Morra defeated Sacha Solomon and Annette Jervasi, 8-4. Both Bajuk and Morra also defeated Solomon and Jeryasi in their singles matches respectively, accounting for all three matches that Queens won in the competition.

Queens College senior Dominika Bajuk defeated Concordia College freshman Ananda Ferrari, 6-4 in the third and final set of the number one singles’ match that decided the 2006 East Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Team Tournament title in Bronxville, NY on Friday afternoon, as Queens bested Concordia, 5-4. Bajuk, the 2004 and 2005 Conference Player of the Year defeated Ferrari, 5-7, 6-3, and 6-4.

Friday’s match was the completion of action that was suspended by darkness on Thursday tied 3-3 in the third set. With the win, Queens raises its record to 10-1, and Concordia is now 9-3.

When play resumed in the deciding singles’ match, Bajuk broke Ferrari to take a 4-3 lead which she never relinquished on her way to the 6-4 final set win, as both players held serve from that point on.

In action on Thursday, Queens took the early lead, as the Lady Knights won two of the three double matches, with Afiya Lahens and Jessie Franklin winning at number two, 8-4, over Concordia’s Llenka Hladikova and Ferrari after the number one (a Concordia win) and three (a Queens win) double slots were split by identical 8-4 scores.

Concordia came back to tie the match at 4-4 winning three of the five singles matches, as Somadi Druker won at number two (6-1, 6-4), Llenka Hladikova won at number three (6-3, 6-3) and Celise Sesanker took the point at number four (6-1, 6-1).

Queens got singles wins from Jennifer Merideth at number five (6-0, 6-1), and Andrea Condur at number six (6-1, 6-1).

Friday marked the second time this season that match between Concordia and Queens has been decided by a 5-4 score, as the Clippers defeated the Lady Knights during the regular season.

Queens has now won five consecutive women’s tennis conference championship tournaments.

Lady Knights Fall to Bloomsburg in NCAA's

The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team defeated Queens College (NY) 5-2 on Friday morning in the second round of the NCAA East Regional Tournament at Bloomsburg University. With the win, the Huskies advance to the NCAA Final Sixteen in Kansas City, Missouri starting on May 9.

The Huskies took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, getting an 8-5 victory from Lindsey Wyckoff (North Canton, OH/ Hoover) and Emily Murphy (Worcester/ Methacton) at second doubles and an 8-4 win from Lauren Colfer (Philadelphia/ St. Basil Academy) and Tracy Nissenbaum (Allentown/ William Allen) at number three doubles.

Wyckoff then earned an easy 6-0, 6-0 victory at fourth singles to give Bloomsburg a 3-1 lead. After Queens won at number one singles, Nissenbaum made it 4-2 at sixth singles, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4). Colfer then clinched the victory for the Huskies with a 6-3, 6-4 win at number five singles.

Bloomsburg improves to 17-3 on the season.

Queens College was crowned NYCAC Women's Tennis Champions for the fourth consecutive year after beating Adelphi University, 5-0, in the Queens College Indoor Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon. With the title comes an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals - the Lady Knights' fifth straight - which will be held next May at a site yet to be determined. The win also helped QC complete their fourth consecutive season of undefeated play versus NYCAC opponents.

For the second straight day Queens won all three doubles matches and closed out their victory with two singles wins. Those two victories came courtesy of Karen Chang, 6-0, 6-0 at #2 singles over Melissa Pashayan, and Tina Shmulevich, who defeated Melissa Kuhner at #4 singles, 6-1, 6-2.

In the doubles match-ups, Dominika Bajuk combined with Karen Chang to upend the duo of Claudia Nunez / Leah Moore 8-2, while Alyssa Morra and Shmulevich beat Mary Hopkins and Kutner 8-1 and Jennifer Merideth combined with Andrea Condur to win at third doubles, 8-0, over Claudette Frysztacki and Geisha Rodriguez.
