I was born and raised in Japan and moved to New York in 1999. Currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Sociology Department at the Graduate Center, I have been involved in research and teaching (both as an adjunct lecturer and teaching assistant, at Queens College and elsewhere) for the past seven years. As a research assistant, my experience includes statistical data analysis, media analysis, translation and interpretation of Japanese scholarly literature. Particular research interests include culture, immigration, race, and ethnicity.

For the past summer (2006), I have been based in Tokyo, interviewing fifty native informants over a three-month period. This fieldwork and documentation will form part of an international comparative study, coordinated by Princeton University, on attitudes among parents and adult children towards shifts in trends in children leaving their parents' homes.

Writing and reading have been consistent pleasures since childhood in Japan, but the fundamental importance of being able to convey ideas in written form has become ever more clear as my academic studies have progressed. Sociologists are very conscious of working in a field where language and numbers meet. I have come to recognize that along with the need for precision, language is central for the conception, the theorization, and interpretation of human behavior. That's why I'm delighted to be able to work with students at Queens and to have the opportunity to help them reach their goals of effective communication.

New Yorkers have the benefit of a rich cultural fabric of linguistic experience. As a foreign-born student, I look forward to helping others appreciate and achieve facility with language--to express themselves fully in pursuit of their studies, their research, and beyond the classroom.
