Special Group Activities

Phi Omega Alpha (POA) Fraternity which was active at QC from 1937 to 1959 held a very successful campus reunion on Saturday Oct 13, 2007. Almost half of all the members who could be contacted attended a five hour luncheon in the Q-Side Lounge in the Dining Hall. In addition to countless stories and delicious food, the gathering featured the original POA banner, a 70 year old photo album ( which has been donated to the College archives) and Silhouette yearbooks from the era.. President Muyskens stopped by and had a great exchange with the group. Planning for the reunion started about a year ago. QC's Executive Director of Events, Joe "Yogi" Brostek ' 55 and Bob Maloney ' 52 (front center left and right) organized the event. A brother, who had not been to QC since graduation said, "It was wonderful to come back and stroll the beautiful campus."

Beta Sigma Omicron Alums from the 50's
Beta Sigs have been returning to the QC Campus over the last few years to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of graduation. It has been rewarding to continue ongoing friendships and to reestablish our old sisterly bond. Thirteen sisters (graduation '49 to '59) and one Beta Phi met on September 20 at the Milleridge Inn in Jericho, Long Island. The winter meeting in NYC is Dec. 6 and in Naples on Feb. 7. Let us know what you've been doing, send us your e-mail or snail mail address, and make plans to join us. Contact Arlene Savage Schertzer '54 at antares@sover.net antares@sover.net.

Sigma Delta Chi Class of 1957
Some of your classmates from Sigma Delta Chi are looking to have a reunion of old friends at the Homecoming this year, the 50th Anniversary, on September 16th. Unfortunately, we have lost touch with most of you. If you wish to participate in this year's Homecoming 2007 (the Class of 1957 will be honored), let Mary (Kraljic) Egan at maryegan@fast.net or call 610-865-1694. She will make sure that you are invited. Mary hopes to see you there!

The House of Bamboo lives on!
Remember when Houseplans were a common thing at Queens College in the 60s and 70s? Remember Follies and Frolics? Remember Intramural sporting events?

The end of March we held a reunion in Las Vegas. Several of us hadn't seen each other in 40 years. 32 people took part over a week period. We went to shows, the highlight being The Beatles Love Cirque du Soleil at the Mirage, and the Platters, Drifters and Coasters show at the Sahara, had an outdoor excursion to the Valley of Fire State Park where we hiked and climbed and had a Reunion Dinner downtown at Fremont Street. The whole experience was heart-warming and we plan on having another one in a few years either in NY or Florida.

The whole reunion was organized by Richie Schecter (Las Vegas). Everything was planned from dinners, to Buffets, to NY Deli sandwiches for our outdoor trips. We have created an online photo album with almost 200 photos from the past and present as well as our own website at www.houseofbamboo.org. We are now in touch with over 70 members.
