2003
Student Recognition Awards Every year, the John
D. Calandra Italian American Institute selects 20 or more New York City high
school students to receive our Student Recognition Awards. All recipients are graduating seniors
of Italian decent, who will be enrolling in a CUNY college in the fall. Nominations are sent to the Calandra
Institute by assistant principals, guidance directors and counselors, and
teachers from both public and parochial schools in The Bronx, Brooklyn,
Queens, and Staten Island. While making
selections among the nominees is always difficult, it is also heartwarming
and inspiring to read about the lives and accomplishments of so many fine
young men and women. These
students truly represent the best and brightest that our rich heritage and
culture has to offer. The primary mission
of the Calandra Institute remains that of fostering higher education among
Italian Americans. We realize
how important it is to recognize young Italian Americans for their
achievements, and to encourage them as they pursue their educational and
career dreams. We are very proud of
the Student Recognition Award winners for June 2003. We, at the Calandra Institute, wish
