Punks and Skinheads of the East Village, 1984-1987 Photographs by Lilian Caruana

Exhibition opening October 27, 2010, at 6 pm
Lilian Caruana's photographs depict the forbidding and intimidating style of the punk and hardcore denizens of New York City's East Village.  These portraits from the mid-1980s explore the individuality and vulnerability beneath that anti-social exterior.
The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Calandra Institute's one-day symposium, HYBRID MOMENTS: Independent Music in Italian America, Friday, November 5, 2010. For further information see our Web site at www.qc.edu/calandra

This exhibit presents some of Sicily’s unique traditions through costumes, fine art and photography, ceramics, literature, and a delightful display of life-size marionettes. The exhibit is a multimedia experience that includes a film on Sicily and its rich history. Public viewing hours Monday through Friday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm; Saturday 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Opening reception Thursday, September 9, 2010.

Italian East Harlem

Italian immigrants who arrived in New York City during the last quarter of the nineteenth century came from a variety of southern Italian towns and each groups sought its own enclave. East Harlem was always an ethnically diverse community. Italian Harlem was born and nurtured amid this diversity and was known as one of New York City’s “Little Italys.”

Ellis Island Immigration Museum

The museum tells the poignant story of the immigrants who entered America through the golden door of Ellis Island and details the history of immigration processing station between 1892 and 1954.  Featuring trunks, baggage, immigrant clothing and costumes, passports, steamer and railroad tickets, ship passenger manifests, and more from Italian immigrants as well as the original painting “Family Supper” by Ralph Fasanella.
