October 27, 2008 (Monday)          6:00 pm

Maria Labozzetta Reads from At the Copa

With humor and poignancy, these stories expose the social and sexual turmoil of men and women in “the old age of youth.” In “The Knife Lady,” a seemingly happily married suburbanite receives a jolt of sexual panic with the visit of a woman selling knives. The husband in “Future Games” encourages his wife to have an affair with another man to save their floundering marriage, and the resulting drama is parsed through the uncomprehending eyes of their young daughter. These are a few of the stories whose primary fault zone is the seemingly stable, often secretly troubled, middle-class marriage seen from various views. Light refreshments will be served.  Seating is limited.  This is part of the Writers Read Series.

D’Amato Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies at Stony Brook University is now poised to launch the first annual conference to be known as Forum on Italian American Criticism, or FIAC for short, with the aim to take stock of these advances, effect a critique or better a self-critique, and propose new hermeneutical models of analysis for the future.

Screening ethnicity: Representations of Italian Americans in U.S. Cinema

Italian Americans occupy a strong, if often contested, place in American media. Stereotypical representations of Italian Americans began in the early 20th century. Such depictions generated significant debates with the Italian American community about the casting of non-Italian Americans in Italian American roles and about the media’s role in creating and maintaining stereotypical representations of Italian Americans.  Senior Vice President Robert M. Pignatello, Office of Finance and Administration cordially invites you to celebrate and recognize Italian American Heritage Month with a special lecture by Anthony Julian Tamburri, Dean, the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute and Professor of Italian American Studies, Queens College.  Refreshments will be served.
