With initial assistance from RAI
(the Italian television station in New York City) and CUNY-TV, the Institute was able to produce a
pilot for an Italian-American magazine show, ITALICS, in June 1986.
The reviews and interest generated by ITALICS from the Italian-American
as well as the community-at-large provided the impetus to continue
productions. In 1991, ITALICS was
granted endorsement as an "Official Quincentenary Project" by the Christopher
Columbus Quincentenary Jubilee Commission in Washington, D.C. This
designation insured that ITALICS would be a vital part of the
celebration, entertaining and informing the audience and furthering the
recognition of Christopher Columbus and his contributions to the world and
its history. During the 1991-92 season, ITALICS featured at least one
segment per program on a specific facet of the Columbus legacy or official
events celebrating this history. The year 1994-95 was a year of
great expansion. The early part of the year saw a new collaboration forged
between the Calandra Institute and the National Italian American Foundation,
which helped to facilitate a more national prominence in both program content
and program delivery. Currently, ITALICS is
being televised on New York City cable stations, numerous stations in New
York State, as well as stations in New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania,
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Florida and California. ITALICS is positioned to assume the role of
national cable television voice for the Italian-American community. Content of ITALICS programs
