Jennifer Wong, 9/11 Victim and THHS Alumna, Honored with Bayside Intersection Renaming

City Councilman and Queens College Alumnus Dan Halloran (third from r.) helps unveil a sign honoring Jennifer Y. Wong (inset), who died at the hands of terrorists at the age of 26 on Sept. 11, 2001, in her office in the World Trade Center.

“Jennifer Y. Wong died Sept. 11, 2001, in her office at Marsh & McLennan on the 96th floor of Tower One of the World Trade Center when a plane piloted by terrorists senselessly ended her life after only 26 years, devastating her family.

Wong, who grew up near the border between Bayside and Whitestone, was commemorated Saturday afternoon by friends, family members and local leaders, who made it possible for a street corner near her home to be renamed in honor of her life and dedication to her community.”

...

“Wong graduated from Townsend Harris High School and Binghamton University. During the last three years of her career at Townsend Harris, Wong returned to PS 20, from which she graduated, and donated her time to volunteer with children, helping to build a program that still connects youths at the two schools.”

...

“ ‘She was right in the impact zone, so we never heard from her,’ Ben Wong told Community Board 7 during a January hearing in which the board approved the renaming. ‘My family goes back to Townsend Harris to give memorial scholarships to students every year to honor her name.’ ”

“A Winning Review for QC”

Posted: 10/6/11

“Once again, the Princeton Review has named QC one of the country’s top undergraduate institutions.  The renowned education services company features Queens in the 2012 edition of its annual college guide, The Best 376 Colleges, and in its 2012 Best in the Northeast.”

“In a nod to [QC’s] extraordinarily diverse learning environment, the college ranked 11th in the United States for ‘Lots of Race/Class Interaction.’  This category reflects how frequently and easily students from different class and ethnic backgrounds interact with one another.

QC saw improvement in our Quality of Life rating, outperforming Fordham University, St. John’s University, Hofstra, Cooper Union, Bard College, and all the SUNY colleges.”

“Meanwhile, a report by the Education Trust, a research and advocacy group, identified QC as one of only five U.S. schools that do a good job of serving low-income students.  The group evaluated 1,186 four-year colleges, looking for institutions where tuition does not exceed $4,600 a year… [along with QC,] Baruch College (CUNY) made the cut; so did the Fullerton and Long Beach branches of California State University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.”
