Below are some examples of the various projects and collaborative programs that are part of our department. |

To further the collaboration between Queens College and Townsend Harris High School, College Preparatory Programs has put together a special week for THHS freshman and sophomore students during which QC professors visit select classes at the high school as guest lecturers to speak to the students about some aspect of the subjects being taught. The QC professors are recruited from the various arts & humanities, social science, and mathematics & natural science divisions at the college.
The purpose of Visiting Professors Week is to highlight interesting topics within the subject fields, introduce students to experts in these disciplines, and facilitate scholarly discussion about the opportunities for further study and even future careers within those fields.
It also creates more opportunities for mentoring between QC faculty and THHS underclassmen, such as the ones that exist currently between those involved in the Social Science Quality of Life and Intel Science/Social Science Research Competitions.
In cooperation with the THHS Assistant Principals and teachers, College Preparatory Programs schedules, recruits, and pays the professors an honorarium per class as well as puts them in touch with the teachers to coordinate the visits and subjects.
Currently, Visiting Professors Week is scheduled once per academic year, generally in April. There has been discussion of expanding the program to once each semester. |
