Meeting called to order at 12:20
1. Approval of the agenda with additional item added: consideration of
committee requirements for how writing assignments are described (becomes #6
below)
2. Approval of minutes of March 5 meeting
3. Progress report:
Analyzing Social Structures: 950-2200 seats per semester
Physical Science (non-lab): 225-960 seats per semester
World Cultures: 900-2100 seats per semester
United States: 50-100 seats per semester
Pre-Industrial: 650-1600 seats per semester
4. Report on revised proposals
AOK = Area of Knowledge
COE = Content of Experience
ER= Extended Requirements
English 161, 161W—revision approved by committee for AOK: Reading Literature
English 165W – revision not yet submitted
History 161- 169. Committee determined that unless a specific new guideline is
issued from UCC concerning “double dipping” no single course may be
counted toward two different AOK. Thus, each Hist course approved for just
one AOK
History 160: approved for AOK: Social Sciences and COE: World Cultures
History 164: approved for approved for AOK: Social Sciences and COE: Europe and
ER: pre-industrial
History 166: approved for AOK: Culture and Values; COE – World Cultures
History 168: approved for AOK: Culture and Values; COE - US

Psychology 101: approved pending minor changes. AOK: natural science.

In only one of several submitted syllabi were PLAS goals included explicitly;
other syllabi need to be adjusted
6. Writing Assignment description: consensus that PLAS guidelines do not
require that writing assignments address PLAS criteria/ activities but may
instead address disciplinary knowledge.
7. Encouraging proposals for “Appreciating the Arts,” “Natural Sciences,”
“Culture and Values” and “Quantitative Reasoning.”
Brief discussion of relevance of incorporating PLAS criteria in
descriptions for Natural Science / Quantitative Reasoning courses; consensus
that LASAR courses cannot simply be “rolled over” into PLAS and that all
depts. must create / submit appropriate documentation and go through
approval process
