Minutes of GEAC Meeting
02 September 2009

Attendance
J. Allen, K. Birth, E. Fernández, A. Li, J. Lidov, M. Miller, L. Pozzan, J. Summerfield, C. Vickery

Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 12:25 PM in Razran 318. Minutes of meeting on May 6, 2009 were approved. Agenda for today’s meeting was approved.

Progress Report:
It was reported that there are not enough Perspectives courses, but at least some of that is due to the 20% student enrollment increase. The committee requests that the UCC ensure that Perspective course class limits are not forced up just to meet enrollment without a dialogue with the instructor/department about whether that will have a negative impact on meeting student learning objectives.

Submission Tabled:
MUSIC 011.3 was tabled by request of the department. The course will be taught as Music 008, a Variable Topics course, which was already approved as Perspectives on 03Sep08.

Revised Submissions Approved:

New Submissions Approved:

* GEAC is recommending that both HNRS 126W and HNRS 226 be approved under the Analyzing Social Structures Area of Knowledge category (SS). The Perspectives resolution requires students to take two SS courses from two different departments. However, the Honors College is not a department, and GEAC affirms that 126W and 226 do not both represent social scientific perspectives from the same discipline. Thus these two courses meet the spirit of the resolution.
