Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 12:25 PM in Razran 318.
Minutes of meeting on May 6, 2009 were approved.
Agenda for today's meeting was approved.
Progress Report
It was reported that there are not enough Perspectives courses,
but at least some of that is due to the 20% student enrollment increase.
The committee requests that the UCC ensure that Perspective course class
limits are not forced up just to meet enrollment without a dialogue with
the instructor/department about whether that will have a negative impact
on meeting student learning objectives.
Submission Tabled:
MUSIC 011.3 was tabled by request of the department.
The course will be taught as Music 008, a Variable Topics course,
which was already approved as Perspectives on 03Sep08.
Revised Submissions Approved:
- HEBRW 150
- EAST 250
- PHYS 001
New Submissions Approved:
- HNRS 125W
- HNRS 126W *
- HNRS 225
- HNRS 226 *
* GEAC is recommending that both HNRS 126W and HNRS 226 be approved under
the Analyzing Social Structures Area of Knowledge category (SS). The
Perspectives resolution requires students to take two SS courses from
two different departments. However, the Honors College is not a department,
and GEAC affirms that 126W and 226 do not both represent social scientific
perspectives from the same discipline. Thus these two courses meet the
spirit of the resolution.

- MEDST 144 (D. Jones)

Other Business
- No new course proposals were received over the summer.
GEAC desires an inventory of the current Perspectives course offerings,
including number of sections and seats, before recommending further outreach.
- There was discussion of "substitute PLAS" courses, and their intent.
Per UCC, GEAC scope does not encompass this component of the Gen Ed curriculum.
- There was discussion regarding the mission and scope of the committee
and whether it includes "assessment" and, if so, what that means. The original UCC
resolution addressing the proposal to create a standing committee was discussed.
- There was discussion regarding the status of the ad hoc GEAC
(General Education Advisory Committee) and the importance of standing committee status.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
M. Miller, Recording Secretary.
