Present: Kevin Birth, Lewis Cook, Eva Fernandez, Andrea Li, Joel Lidov ,
Jeff Maskovsky , Barbara Simerka,  Chris Vickery

The meeting was called to order at 12:20

1.    agenda approved

2.    minutes of December meeting approved

3.    Discussion of college-wide Call for Proposals
 Kevin will communicate with divisional deans about the number and types
of sections needed for fall 08 and spring 09, so deans can mobilize dept
chairs to create necessary courses / submit proposals.  Committee noted
that streamlining needed for approval by both  PLAS and UCC

4.    Update on web-based submission system

5.    Discussion of Proposals

A.    Reading Literature
English 161, 161W (reviewed by Simerka and Maskovsky)
Proposal approved, pending revision to course description to make PLAS
objectives more explicit.

English 162, 162W (reviewed by Cook and Birth)
Proposal approved, pending revision to course description to make PLAS
objectives more explicit

English 165W (reviewed by Cook and Vickery)
Proposal approved, with a heads up to be given that proposal does not
indicate assessment protocols, which will be a focus of next Middle State
review.

Barbara Simerka will serve as liaison to communicate with Eng. Dept about
details of revisions

B.    Analyzing Social Structures
Anthropology 101 (reviewed by Maskovsky and Vickery)
Proposal approved, with a heads up to be given that proposal does not
indicate assessment protocols, which will be a focus of next Middle State
review.

Urban Studies 101 (reviewed by Birth and Li)
Proposal approved, pending revision to course description to make PLAS
objectives more explicit, to facilitate conformity among adjuncts.

Kevin Birth will serve as liaison to communicate with Urban Studies Dept
about details of revisions

6.    Upon advice from the UCC, GEAC determined that variable topics
courses must fulfill the same PLAS requirements in every section. It is
not possible for a variable topics course to sometimes fulfill some PLAS
requirements and sometimes other PLAS requirements.
