(Submission #135)
This course satisfies one of the W requirements. We will do careful and close readings of the three main literary genres: fiction, drama, and poetry. We will put on scenes from the plays we read and see film versions of some of the assigned texts where possible. If possible, we might go to an off –Broadway or Broadway play. This course aims to introduce students to learn how to analyze literary texts and how to write about a literary work; therefore, this course combines a study of literature with continued training in clear and effective written expression. The overriding aim is to give students an appreciation of the three main literary forms and to develop a respect for the power of diverse literary expressions and the ways literature affects our imagination and reveals the human condition. Implicit in this aim is to discover why some literary texts have gotten and continue to be banned.
