Through theoretical readings on history and memory and through explorations of the historiography of Ireland and memory, the course will address the nature of history and the place of history within a liberal arts curriculum. Active student participation will take place through discussions of the meanings of original texts. The study of memory involves the study of culture and values_what beliefs and values individuals and society held and how they shaped memory, and how memory, in turn, affected societies. There will be a focus on diversity_how memory is contested by different groups. There will also be a focus on how memory has changed over time and the forces that led to those changes.
