Graduates should carefully review the Commencement materials (sent in early April to those who filed applications) so their guests can be fully informed as to the times, dates and places of any Departmental events.  If you have any questions, please check with your Division or Department.

The Commencement Office will try its best to answer all your questions in the materials you will be sent in April. If you carefully review these materials, you and your guests will have an enjoyable experience.

ADDITIONAL REGISTRAR INFORMATION AND REQUIREMENTS
Degrees are conferred three times a year: February 1 (Fall Class), May 29 (Spring Class), and September 1 (Summer Class).   "Conferral" means that the Registrar posts a notation of the award of a degree in the College's academic records. For most purposes, the terms "graduation" and "conferral of a degree" are synonymous.  "Commencement" however, is another matter.   It refers to the ceremony which will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2008. REMEMBER:  IF YOU DO NOT FILE A GRADUATION APPLICATION WITH THE REGISTRAR (ON TIME) YOU CANNOT GRADUATE. YOUR ONLY OPTION WILL BE TO FILE FOR THE NEXT GRADUATION CYCLE.

PROGRAMS
Graduates receive programs in assembly areas when they line up at 8:25 AM for procession. Guests obtain programs from tents on the Quad.

PROCESSION
THE QUAD COLLEGE-WIDE PROCESSION: The Graduate procession includes 4 lines of march. Masters will be assigned to their appropriate line and march at the head of the column. Bachelors must choose the Division with whom they wish to march. (Most choose to march with their majors.) Please be sure to return the Reply Card which will be mailed to you in early April.
TO AVOID DELAYS AND ERRORS YOU MUST FILL IN BOTH SIDES OF YOUR CARD COMPLETELY.

SUNSHINE PLAN
If you reply that you will participate, a color-coded line-up card and map will be sent to you in early May to tell you where to meet your marching group. You must be in your area by 8:25 AM for line-up. Marshals will instruct you. The procession starts at 9:00 AM sharp. When you reach your row, please move in quickly and remain standing, facing center aisle.

RAIN PLAN
Our Commencement goes on rain-or-shine. If raining or the weather is threatening, rain ponchos will be distributed to those who march. We request that you wear the poncho over the gown. It is assumed your guests will dress for the weather and bring umbrellas if necessary. If it rains, the program will be shortened.

If it is raining heavily at line-up time, all processions will form indoors (as shown below) and wait for instructions. The signal to line up indoors instead of outdoors will be the flying of a white "rain flag" on the Quad flagpole. The college website and switchboard (718-997-5000) will also advise if the rain plan is in effect. If we have to line up indoors, please be extra attentive to the Marshals and security who will be relaying instructions to you.

CONFERRING OF DEGREES
CONFERRING OF DEGREES AT THE QUAD COLLEGE-WIDE CEREMONY
Each group of degree candidates will be asked to stand. One previously designated representative of each group will proceed to the stage to be hooded. (In the interests of time, other graduates do not go to the platform. It would take hours.) After the group representative is hooded, the group is asked to be seated. After the hoodings, all graduates will be asked to stand as the president confers all degrees.

Note: Many graduates will have the opportunity to "walk on stage" at the events immediately following Commencement.
