John Isaac Beatty served in the 117th Infantry Regiment of the 30th Infantry Division, a division that was committed to fighting the Germans immediately after the invasion of Normandy. Beatty was killed in action a little over two months after the invasion while in combat in Brittany, France on 10th of August 1944. His sacrifice and that of many of his fellow soldiers helped Gen. Patton bring major Allied forces into Brittany. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the World War II Victory Medal. His is buried in the Brittany American Cemetery located in St. James, France.
