The Prostituting of the Student Union Building:
How we’ve lost control of a building built specifically for students

“When deep space exploration ramps up, it’ll be the corporations that name everything: the IBM Stellar Sphere, the Microsoft Galaxy, Planet Starbucks.”-©Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk.

Students may not be aware, but the Student Union building is actually run by a separate corporate entity than that of Queens College Campus proper. This corporation has made several good decisions over the past few years (having Blimpie’s and Starbucks open up in the SU comes to mind). However, some of their other policies are somewhat questionable.

Don’t be surprised if the Student Union building is renamed the Kaplan building in the next couple of years. If you venture to the third floor of the Student Union building during the evenings, you’ll notice non-campus organizations using the meeting rooms which were originally intended for use of Student Organizations. The spirit in which these rooms were built was originally to be used for student clubs, Greek-Letter, or other organization’s meetings on campus. They could also be used to hold events for the clubs. Now they’re used primarily for Kaplan courses and other non-student events, whoever is the highest bidder.

What happens to the Clubs or Greek-Letter Organizations then? We’re relegated to the labyrinth of corridors which make up the SU basement in what amount to closets. If your organization is larger than 3 people then too bad! The GRE class upstairs makes the SU more money!

Take it back! It is your building! Resist the Corporatization of our Campus!
