The 9th Annual
Conductors Workshop
at Queens College
July 8 - 14, 2019
A short ride away from New York City, the Queens College Conductors Workshop (QCCW) is a training ground for emerging and established conductors alike. Conductors have 150 minutes of podium time, working regularly with the QCCW Festival Orchestra, our professional-level, highly responsive orchestra, and the QCCW Quintet, our smaller coaching ensemble. Conducting Fellows will receive critiques, coaching, and hands-on lessons from the faculty and participate in lectures, and score study session. We will also tour the New York Philharmonic Archives, where marked scores by former NYPhil music directors are placed on view, and the Columbia University Archives.
New works will be performed each session with the composers present, helping to give insight into what composers expect to see as their scores come to life. This year, fellows will work with composer Bruce Saylor on his new composition that will be workshopped at the festival Director Tong Chen continues the vision of the late Maurice Peress, the founder of the QCCW in 2010. She is joined by other world-class faculty members, Donald Portnoy and Octavio Más-Arocas.
The workshop takes place in the beautiful LeFrak Concert Hall, one of the best acoustic spaces in the New York Area.
