Notes on 6 to 12 Curriculum

• CC=College credit.
• All college credit courses are one-year courses except where indicated.
• We should devise a writing program around World Civ.
• English 110 should include a conversation with World Civ. 126 and 255. The latter includes literature.
• The Art elective could be done as part of students’ community service, i.e., joining a local theater group. It would not be taken for college credit.
• Extended day should be funded.
• Advisories will be added to every school year beginning in 6^th grade.
• State standards should be included.
• 5 teachers would be needed at the beginning (Humanities, Math, Music/PE, FL, ESL?, Science). If we have a trimester of different languages, what will the FL teacher be doing during the rest of time when he/she’s not teaching? Maybe we can find an FL teacher that teaches ESL.
• One or more teachers may need to act as counselors or social workers. All teachers will do advising.
• In developing the HS curriculum, we need to keep in mind our LASAR courses, articulation issues with QC and with CUNY in general.
• It would be best for students to take calculus-based physics in their senior year.
• There should be enrichment opportunities throughout.
• Should students take a Speech class that has a public speaking component? In which grade?
• Should students do news reporting and writing, i.e., Journalism 101? In which grade?
• Students should take a statistics course.
• We need to incorporate the concept of Extended Humanities that includes reading,  writing, speaking, history, English Language Arts, etc.
• Mathematics should be connected with lots of writing
• Participating in government. How has a student of the QC HS demonstrated this? Poli Sci? By an independent or group project (portfolio).  Help legislator write the law as a long term project. Portfolio assessment? Multiple projects could show evidence of this standard. Who should be in the committee that reviews the evidence? How do you present that you have fulfilled the requirement? Report card, Regents score, and portfolio.
• Capstone or senior project. Start thinking about it in grade 9. Advisories would be useful in this area. One option would be to do original research in the field of science.
• Interest groups or clubs should be embedded into the curriculum.
• PE could be an after-school project?
• English Regents is mostly about literacy (reading comp) and not about a specific body of knowledge.
• In addition to the courses, there will be an underlying theme that is research driven, that incorporates field work, and addresses the cultural and  linguistic diversity of the county.
• It would appear that we are doing too many “American” flavored courses when we indicated in our proposal that the emphasis was on global diversity.
• We could incorporate the Heritage culture of the students.
