Guidelines on New Contract Provisions

Reassigned Time for Untenured Faculty

The contractual agreement provides reassigned time to pursue scholarly work for untenured assistant, associate, and full professors, except Librarians and Counselors, initially appointed on or after Sept. 1, 2002. This provision takes effect Oct. 31, 2002; thus, for practical purposes, beginning with the Spring 2003 semester. The reassigned time is “not to exceed a total of 12 contact hours during their first three annual appointments in order to engage themselves in scholarly and/or creative activities related to their academic disciplines.”

In consultation with their department chairpersons, eligible faculty should, preferably within their first year, write a proposal for the reassigned time, providing a schedule of how the time would be distributed over the three years and a description of the proposed scholarly work. The allocation of reassigned time will be made by the Provost after consultation with the dean and chair, taking into account the scheduling needs of the department and the college. One faculty member might apply to be fully reassigned for a semester; another might apply to be partly reassigned for several semesters. Subsequent to the reassigned time for one semester, the faculty member must report on his or her activities. Proposals for scholarly activity must be discussed with the department chairperson. The proposal and the report will become part of the annual evaluation and guidance of the faculty member.
