General Operational Procedures for Graduate Programs at Queens College

1.         All students and faculty should make themselves aware of the regulations for operation of their graduate program at Queens College. The procedures are provided in the current Graduate Bulletin, are compiled in the Queens College Graduate Studies Handbook 2002, both of which are available from the Office of Graduate Studies, Kiely Hall 139A, and are provided on the web at http://www.qc.edu/gadm/ghb.htm.

These are the regulations governing the operation of all of our graduate programs and are required for proper maintenance of records

2.         All students should attain matriculated status before proceeding beyond twelve (12) credits of graduate work. Students reaching this level without becoming matriculated will not be permitted to continue to register for additional credits.

3.         Only bone fide graduate courses may count toward a graduate degree at Queens College. That is, only Queens College courses with a registration number between 600 and 799 will count toward the required credits for a graduate degree. (e.g. URBST 740 - Delivery of Public Services). Undergraduate Queens College courses do not count toward graduate degrees.

4.         Courses taken at other institutions to be applied to graduate credit at Queens College must be bone fide graduate courses at those institutions. Only authorized courses from accredited institutions with registered graduate programs are acceptable. As a rule of thumb, courses to be so credited should be described in the graduate course listings of the offering institution.

5.         Permission to take a course or courses at some other institution must be obtained prior to registering for that course. As explained in the above noted documents, this involves completion of a request form (attained at the Office of the Registrar) by the student and the graduate adviser, submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies, and then taken to the Office of the Registrar before registering for the course at the offering institution.

6.         Graduate students should discuss their program and registration with their program graduate adviser each semester. Only full-time faculty associated with the particular program should be advising students with regard to that program. Advising should not be done by adjuncts (except is special instances, e.g. the adjunct is retired from a full-time position in the concerned program), clerical staff or other students. Full-time faculty should be available for reasonable discussion of program with students.

7.         Don’t make it up as you go along! If there is any question (for student or faculty) concerning what should be done in a particular instance, check the sources listed above or contact the Office of Graduate Studies
