Dear Parents,

            A few items of interest:

As of this past Monday, we have a new gym floor, thanks to the efforts of Ms. Jackie Cohen, Director of the Beacon Program.  The Physical Education classes will now be held in the gym, instead of outside in the yard.  Please make sure that your child wears sneakers on the appropriate days.  Some 6th and 7th graders are studying Healthy Living, the mandated middle school health class instead of Physical Education.

Sadly, our 7th grade social studies teacher, Ms. Grace, has had to take a medical leave of absence, for a non-contagious illness.  She will not return for the rest of the semester.  We are interviewing candidates to take her position now.  In the meantime, classes 7Q and 7I will receive an additional Math class, with materials provided by Ms. Francipane, until our new teacher arrives.  7S will continue to work with Mr. Kim, a very talented student teacher. Mr. Dimonte and Ms. Ophals, both licensed Social Studies teachers, will continue to supervise Mr. Kim.

          THE BUDGET CUT

The 1.75% budget cut reduced our school’s budget by more than $24,000.  Because of the cut we have made the following changes:

The extended school day now ends at 3:45, 10 minutes earlier.

Beginning on March 17, the number of teachers available for tutoring during the morning Achievement Team at 8:10 will be reduced.

We have limited money for supplies and books this year.  In some cases we may be asking you to purchase some paperback books for your child, such as plays or review books.  Of course, if you need help with this just give me a call.

I am very concerned about our budget for the coming year. We expect a cut of 5%.  This will have a profound impact on our school.  Naturally, all of us will continue to do our very best to provide the best possible Early College education but we will need your help with contacting the mayor and local politicians about restoring the cut, your help with providing some supplies and your help making the most of the limited tutoring before and after school.  The PTA is distributing a flyer today about how parents can have a voice.  Perhaps you want to join the rally at City Hall on March 19?

Finally, on a positive note, thanks to Dr. Lila Swell and Ms. Jillian Crosby of Queens College, QSI now has a trained Peer Mediation Team of students.  We hope that their work will prevent some of the more feisty interactions that occasionally happen in a middle school and promote a more peaceful resolution to any conflicts.
