French Revolution Game:

"Reacting to the Past" in Paris, France

Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité!
During our stay in Paris, we will study the background and history of the French Revolution, including the Enlightenment. We will react in the historical moment of the meetings held by the National Assembly in 1791. The French Revolution game will plunge students into the intellectual, political, and ideological currents that surged through revolutionary Paris that summer. Students will become leaders of major factions within the National Assembly (and in the streets outside) as it struggles to create a constitution amidst internal chaos and threats of foreign invasion.

They will face questions such as: Will the king Louis XVI retain power? Will the priests of the Catholic Church obey the general will of the National Assembly or the dictates of the pope in Rome? Do traditional institutions and values constitute restraints on freedom and individual dignity or are they its essential bulwarks? Are slaves, women, and Jews entitled to the rights of man? Is violence a legitimate means of changing society or of purging it of dangerous enemies? Some of the highlights will include walking tours of revolutionary sites in Paris, including The Louvre, Les Invalides, the Bastille, the Palais-Royal, the Conciergerie, and the revolutionary 6th arrondissement, and day trips to Versailles and the Royal Palace of Fontainebleau. A special feature will be the opportunity to experience the celebrations of Bastille Day on July 14th, France’s national holiday, first hand.

French Language and Culture in Paris

Four-week, four-credit intensive program in French Language at the French Language and Culture Institute at the Institut Catholique de Paris (located on the Left Bank, near the Latin Quarter). Beginning, intermediate, and advanced level language courses are offered. Students will take a French placement test prior to departure and will study French grammar and conversation in the mornings with afternoons and weekends free to practice conversation in French or explore Paris and the Ile de France.

Italian and French Cinema in Italy and France

Italian Cinema - Florence

We will examine a sampling of major Italian films. We will consider their place in film and political history as well as some of the ways in which the movies to be screened use such elements as narrative structure, camerawork, and music. The course will focus primarily on directors such as Fellini, Antonioni, and Bertolucci. An analytical paper of a film seen outside of class will be required. All course work will be done in English.

Italy and France Through the Eyes of Travelers: Florence and Paris

Course conducted in English
Some of the finest (but least-read) literature in the English language has been written by travelers as they explore the world. In this course, you will have the opportunity to deepen and enrich your exploration of two of the world's great cities "Florence and Paris" by reading and discussing literary texts set in, or written about, these two historic European centers of art, culture, and romance.

Living in the place you are reading about will make the texts come alive: reading about the places you are exploring will make your experience of those places much more exciting and meaningful. "Eyes- and ears-on" writing assignments and visits to sites described in the texts will help you to discover the true joy and challenges inherent in traveling, in which, as Jack Kerouac said, "You always learn something and learn to change your thoughts." Through assigned journal entries and writing assignments, you will also have the chance to add your own voice, your own thoughts and impressions, your own tales, to the existing body of travel literature.

Part One: Florence, in the Heart of Tuscany

With its beautiful landscape and its rich culture and history, Tuscany has long been considered an appealing destination for English-speaking tourists. In this course, students will stay in Florence, the cultural and artistic center of Tuscany. Texts describing Florence and the surrounding area will be drawn from a diverse selection of first-class British and American writers from E.M. Forster to Linda Watanabe McFerrin. Field trips to some of the sites we are reading about will complement class discussions, and give you the chance to get beyond the surface, and experience Florence in a way most tourists never can.

Part Two: Paris, City of Light and Love

For centuries Paris has attracted the young and talented, the brightest and the best, in their pursuit of truth, beauty, and romance. What is it about this city that has captured the imagination of the world for so long, and has provided generations of artists, writers, and other creative people with the inspiration that moved them to create their best work? Through texts by Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Langston Hughes, Jack Kerouac, Shay Youngblood and others, we will explore this magnificent city, learning much about its history and its people, as we seek answers to the question "Why Paris?" and find our own unique answers to the question as we discover that it continues to do so to this day.

Great Italian Opera in Florence

This course gives a broad overview of Italian operatic history. Tracing its origins back to the late sixteenth century ‘Camerata’ in Florence (which led to the first music dramas of Claudio Monteverdi), the course explores the history of Italian opera through a chronological selection of representative works from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Emphasis will be placed on: musical, dramaturgical, sociological and historical aspects of opera. Other topics include: the technical issues of opera production, the role of singers and the relationship between the composer and the playwright or librettist. Selected works include: Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Bellini’s La Sonnambula, Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Verdi’s Rigoletto and Puccini’s Boheme.

Photography in Florence

Conducted in English
This is a course in how to see photographically. It will not focus on hardware or the darkroom-rather it will be concerned with the visual, intellectual, and intuitive elements that go into making a photograph. Florence will be the setting against which both beginning and intermediate photographers can improve their photographic techniques. Students will learn how to establish a point of view, develop a personal vision, and edit their pictures into a coherent visual narrative. The goal will be to discover honest documentary images with a high aesthetic value to communicate ideas beyond the obvious or clichéd.

Experimentation will be encouraged, and students will be expected to explore and test new ideas, to use a variety of skills in landscape, portraiture, street photography, and intimate pictures of daily life to produce a photo essay on a topic of their choosing. Students may work in any film or with digital cameras, with film processed by a local lab. Each morning students will gather for group and individual critiques; afternoons and evenings will be spent shooting. Weekends will provide an opportunity for students to travel and photograph outlying areas on their own. The course will strike a balance between fieldwork, critiques, new aesthetic material, and the freedom to explore and photograph in Florence.

Art History in Florence

This course will immerse students in the art and culture of the Renaissance in the incomparably beautiful city of its birth. We will survey masterpieces of painting, sculpture, and architecture from Giotto and the dawn of Humanism through the 15th century of Masaccio, Donatello, Brunelleschi, and the patronage of the famous Medici family. Our survey will culminate with the High Renaissance genius of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci and a shift of focus to papal Rome.

The city of Florence itself will be our metaphorical classroom and inspiration. We will explore its rich artistic heritage through its astounding museums, churches, piazzas, palaces, villas, and gardens. Florence is also a living city, where narrow medieval streets mesh seamlessly with a vibrant contemporary scene. To study art history within this context of both classic and modern sensibilities is an unforgettable learning experience.

Interior Design in Florence

Conducted in English
This is an introductory course on the planning and furnishing of interiors. The technical (architectural drawing: plans, facades, sectional drawing, space planning, colour development etc ) and theoretical aspects of the subject are covered together with an overview of the history of interior design, technology and materials. Field trips form part of the course.The course is an introduction to the interior design profession: students will learn the fundamental concepts of residential design, basic space planning, furnishing, color development, and material selection.

Being a course for beginners, the instructor will teach the main methods of two- and three -dimensional representation: orthographic projections, perspective and axonometric views. Students will start with easy exercises in order to handle tools, geometric rules, different scales and other basic requirements. Slides related to historical examples of interiors will be shown during the first classes, starting from the Industrial Revolution, ending with contemporary design. Field trips will have a great importance in the development of the students’ skills; these will benefit enormously from exposure to the practical aspects of interior design, including visits to work-in-progress or workshops, exhibition fairs and showroom.

Food and Culture in Florence

Study in Florence, Italy to immerse yourself in the rich heritage of Italian food traditions, culture and society. Florence is a paradise for real ÒfoodiesÓwho will enjoy eating at many excellent restaurants as well as exploring the huge food market where just about anything can be found, from fruit and cheeses to meat and fish. Lectures will cover such topics as the role of women in Italian society, the survival of superstitions and the effect of social change on culture and style. Students will have hands-on experience with cooking and wine-tasting lessons in-house, supplemented with field visits.

Fashion in Florence

Music and Dance
Fantasia di Firenze

Course in Music and Dance Composition. Students register for three credits as either a dancer/choreographer or as a musician/composer. Students can also register for 6 credits as a dancer/choreographer/musician/composer! The music composition component is designed for musicians of orchestral instruments, piano and voice who read music proficiently. Music students should normally have completed at least 4 semesters of college level music theory. (Exceptions may be granted, contact Prof. Smaldone directly). Students with dance abilities at all levels are welcome.

Students will compose original dances and original music for a live performance. Techniques of composition and choreography will be explored through a series of workshops, classes, lessons, small group and private instruction. We will create a series of pieces that will explore the Florentine cultures of painting, sculpture, literature, architecture and science and the figures of Dante, Michaelangelo, Galileo, the Medicis, St. Francis, and others. Student works will be presented in a historic space in Florence in a public performance at the conclusion of the program. Students will receive a DVD of the performance.

Italian Language and Culture

Study Italian language and culture in one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Italy. Perugia, the capital of Umbria, is located halfway between Rome and Florence. It is also near Siena, Assisi, Cortona, and other hill towns in Umbria and Tuscany.

The John D. Calandra Italian American Institute, in collaboration with the European Languages and Literatures Department at Queens College and the University for Foreigners of Perugia (Universitá per Stranieri di Perugia), is offering a summer study abroad program for students interested in Italian language and culture. It will be held at Universitá per Stranieri di Perugia, Italy’s oldest and most prestigious enter of Italian language education.

On the Trail of King Arthur

We, Knight Errants, set sail over the sea to ancient Brittania, on the trail of King Arthur. Our quest begins at John Moores University in Liverpool. There we study the early texts (to include some films) of Arthur from the Mabinogion (Welsh text, dating to 6th century, A.C.E.) to Geoffrey of Monmouth, Mallory’s Le Morte d’Arthur and sections of Tennyson’s Idylls of the King. For the next part of our quest, we set out and explore major Arthurian landmarks in Wales, Cornwall, and Glastonbury.

We visit enchanted forests, magical wells and waterfalls, and medieval castles by starlight. We stand inside the Stonehenge circle at dawn (with special permision; visitors aren’t allowed inside the perimeter fence!) We travel through the magnificent landscape of Wales, the inspiration for both Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and C.S. Lewis’s Narnia. Onward, to the site of what is believed to be fabled Camelot . . . the site of Arthur’s final battle with Mordred . . . look out at Arthur’s reputed resting place, seek out the hilltop where Merlin’s power was first revealed, and more. We also receive a day’s weapons training from a medieval arms master. We spend a day with a High Priestess of the pre-Druidic Mother Goddess religion.

Of course, we would be remiss if we didn’t stop at Stratford upon Avon to visit the birthplace of that other famous Bard. Finally, our quest brings us to London, where we study later Arthurian texts (to include films, operas and musicals) T.H. White’s The Once and Future King and Marion Zimmer Bradley’s The Mists of Avalon.

Athens Greece: A Quest for Your Ithaca

Walk on the traces of the ancient gods and goddesses, of Socrates, Odysseus, Agamemnon, Helen of Troy-tread the paths of antiquity, Byzantium, and modern Greece. Embark on the journey to your own Ithaca while exploring the roots of western civilization. Through field trips and the comparative and interdisciplinary study of literature, myth, language, history, art, politics, philosophy, psychology and sociology, students will be able to resurrect three millennia of culture, myth, and history and appreciate the importance of the past in shaping our cultures.

Living and studying facilities will be provided in Plaka, the heart of the old and the contemporary city, where students can enjoy its vibrant lifestyle, countless restaurants, cafes, shops, and cultural activities.

Study Spanish in Valladolid, one of Spain’s most historic and most modern cities, where Ferdinand and Isabella got married, Christopher Columbus died, and home to one of Europe’s most important science museums. Picture yourself at one of Spain’s oldest university campuses (dating from the 13th century), or at one of its newest (c. 2001)-named in honor of Miguel Delibes, a leading anti-Franco writer of the post-Spanish Civil War period. Study where Cervantes, Quevedo, Góngora, Delibes, Umbral, and other literary greats have created masterpieces in Spanish, one of the world’s most important languages for culture, business, and politics. Sample the cuisine of Castilla-León in one of Spain’s gastronomical capitals, and visit the museums and galleries to embrace one of Europe’s oldest cultures.

Culture, Civilization, Cinema and Art in Madrid

Walk the streets of Cervantes in the centuries- old yet ultramodern capital of Spain, a nation which represents the most advanced social changes of Europe. There you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in history as well as in a vibrant society that epitomizes the Europe of the Future. Courses in Spanish language, literature, cinema, or culture and civilization may be taken through the Queens College program in conjunction with the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija (Madrid, Spain). Additional tours and excursions are included to round out your experience abroad. Visit Toledo, Segovia, the Prado museum, tapas bars, flamenco cafes, etc. Courses may be taken at different levels of study (intermediate or advanced undergraduate or graduate) depending on skill and prerequisites needed. STOCS Travel Grants

Participants in summer programs are eligible for STOC (Study/Travel Opportunities for CUNY students) travel grants. STOCS scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1500, are offered to undergraduate CUNY students who participate in short-term (summer and winter intersession) CUNY study abroad programs.
