Introduction to Interior Design

DESCRIPTION
This is an introductory course on the planning and furnishing of interiors. The technical (architectural drawing: plans, facades, sectional drawing, space planning, colour development etc ) and theoretical aspects of the subject are covered together with an overview of the history of interior design, technology and materials. Field trips form part of the course.The course is an introduction to the interior design profession: students will learn the fundamental concepts of residential design, basic space planning, furnishing, color development, and material selection. Being a course for beginners, the instructor will teach the main methods of two- and three -dimensional representation: orthographic projections, perspective and axonometric views. Students will start with easy exercises in order to handle tools, geometric rules, different scales and other basic requirements. Slides related to historical examples of interiors will be shown during the first classes, starting from the Industrial Revolution, ending with contemporary design. The final exam will be the redesign of an existing space. Limits of intervention will be also given in order to get the students accustomed to face and solve various problems of different origins: physical, economical, structural, psychological. Field trips will have a great importance in the development of the students' skills; theese will benefit enormously from exposure to the practical aspects of interior design, including visits to work-in-progress or workshops, exhibition fairs and showrooms. The teacher will also help the student develop an individual artistic style and approach through the creation of mood-boards related to their projects. Exercises and projects will be started in class under the supervision of the teacher and then continued and finished at home as homework.

OBJECTIVE
The course aim is to provide students with the basic understanding of interior design theories and techniques. Students will learn the basic knowledge of interior design both from the historical and practical point of view.

PREREQUISITES & REQUIREMENTS
Being a course for beginners, no special requirements are needed.

METHOD
Slides, lectures, practical exercises in class, field trips, class discussions. The first lessons will be a general introduction: the teacher will show slides approaching the matter from an historical point of view, asking students to give opinions and interact during lessons, in order to ascertain the average level of the class. Then readings will be recommended to students and discussed during lessons in order to extend their knowledge. Most of the lessons will be dedicated to practical exercises and to field trips.

ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION
Attendance is mandatory. Every absence will lower the attendance grade. In addition: · if the student misses 20% of the scheduled class hours during this course (i.e. at the 3rd absence), the final grade will be lowered by one full letter grade. If more than 20% of the scheduled class hours is missed (4th absence), the final grade will be "F" and NO credits will be given for this course. A correct, active and responsible participation is strictly recommended. Should issues of academic dishonesty arise (plagiarism and so on), the teacher will refer to the FUA written policy on such matters.

TEST & ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments refer to the completion of the projects that have been started in class. The first test will consist of surveying and redesigning of a small space. Special attention will be given to the architectural and structural aspects. The decoration of the space will complete the project.

TEXT BOOK, READINGS & SOURCES
This course does not require a mandatory textbook. Photocopies of furniture standard measurements will be given to students to develop correctly the final project. Specialized texts and a wide range of international magazines can be easily found at the FUA Library. They can be used both to develop teacher's explanations and to provide ispiration for the projects.

EXTRA FEES
A lab fee of 10 € is to be paid at the beginning of the course for the use of shared materials, photocopy machine and the computer equipment. The payment of the fee is mandatory in the first week of class, otherwise the student won't be allowed to work in open studio time. Lab fees are going to be paid directly to the student FUA Advisor. Approx. 50 € are necessary for personal supplies (see materials in paragraph 11 - MATERIAL LIST).

VISITS & TRIPS
During the course some visits will be scheduled during class time such as field trips to lighting showrooms, furniture showrooms and works in progress. Students are expected to pay for city bus tickets (approx. 2 €). A field trip to the "Salone del Mobile" Fair in Milan is scheduled on April, Sunday 9.

MATERIAL LIST
Although the school provides some basic art supplies, students have to buy individually all the other supplies to be used in the course for their personal creative projects. Students will buy the material on the first day with the teacher. FINAL EXAM
Presentation of the final project will characterizes the final exam. During the first part of the final class students will have the opportunity to complete their projects. Finally, all the students will present their works showing the first concepts from their mood-boards and describing the projects through the technical drawings (floor plans and vertical cuts). Remember that the dates of the exams can NOT be changed for any reason, so please organize yourself accordingly. LESSONS

FIRST WEEK 1. Monday Class presentation, tools and supplies, metric system and scales, drawing of a plan in different scales. Introduction to the technical drawing and the orthographic projections. Presentation of the projects to be developed in the during the semester. Homework. 2. Tuesday How to make a survey and the transferring of the data in a drawing. Orthographic projections of a simple object. Homework. 3. Wednesday Correction of drawings, main measures of spaces and furniture, measure your body and the furniture of your house. Axonometric view. Drawing an object in 3d. Homework. 4. Thursday How to draw a plan with the use of pens. Bedroom and bathroom, slides and discussion about materials.
SECOND WEEK 5. Monday Materials in Interiors Design 1. Surveying a space. Bathroom, drawings colors and different models, the project of a bathroom in plan and elevation with dimensions. Visit to a Showroom. 6. Tuesday Correction of the drawings and color them; turn in the exercises. 7.Wednesday Correction of the drawings and color them; turn in the exercises. 8. Thursday Presentation of the project for a bathroom.
THIRD WEEK 9. Monday Organizing final work: Project of a small apartment. Inspiration board and short essay about project's theme. Correction of the drawings, free hand sketches and color them. 10. Tuesday Defining drawings for final work. Standard measurements for inner spaces and furniture. 11.Wednesday Working on drawings for final work. Continuing the design a small apartment 12. Thurday Field trip visit to a furniture show room. Continuing the design a small apartment in plan, elevation, section, free hand sketches, color them.
FOURTH WEEK 13. Monday Working on drawings for final work. Works on drawings for the final presentation, turn in the paper. 14. Tuesday Working on drawings for final work. 15. Wednesday Working on drawings for final work. 16. Thursday
FINAL EXAM.
