| Home | King Henry VIII and the English ReformationJoin us for an exciting week in London as we explore Henry VIII's schism from the Catholic Church just so he could get a divorce! Henry VIII, a man who envisioned his reign as the new Camelot and the return of the King. In this course, we 'react' on-site to the historical moment of the English Reformation (1529-36) and its incredible significance to the world as we now know it. Specifically, we engage in a role-playing module designed so students play the principle players of the English Reformation, from Henry VII himself, the key figures in the English Parliament to emissaries of the Catholic Church and Catherine of Aragon. We will debate such issues as Church versus State, Divorce, Independence and the Right to National Self-Determination, all issues of extreme relevance today, issues the English Reformation set precedent for in the political arena. Ultimately, students through reading, role-play, debate, and interaction enjoin in the dynamics of this pivotal moment in Western history, not to mention American, by becoming active agents of history themselves. And what better place than London itself, where we visit Parliament ('Remember, remember, the 5th of November!'), the Tower of London (a "tool" of statecraft extensively used by Henry and his daughter, Elizabeth), and lots, lots more, in one of the major cultural and historical capitals of the world!
