TIME 2000 is dedicated to providing you with the richest academic experience possible. That means that your education extends beyond the classroom. Special events such as seminars, mathematical and/or educational conferences, trips to museums and Broadway shows, and other events are scheduled for TIME 2000 students each semester.

TIME 2000 UNDERGRADUATE MAKES A PRESENTATION AT THE ANNUAL REUNION
At the Annual Reunion Dinner hosted by TIME 2000 Director, Professor Alice Artzt, Mr. Sung Yan Chiu, Class of 2010, shared his knowledge and skills of origami and related the art of paper folding to mathematics, calling the hands-on activity—Mathigami. Everyone followed directions and attempted to make a paper crane. Sung demonstrated how to integrate mathematics and art—Thanks, Sung!

TIME 2000 GRADUATE HONORED
At Dr. Artzt’s Annual Reunion Dinner on Monday, 25 January 2010, Ms. Irina (Zavurov) Kimyagarov, TIME 2000 undergraduate, Class of 2002, graduate Class of 2006, and mathematics department chairman at Elmont Memorial High School, was honored for mentoring and supervising student teachers. She became the second mathematics educator to receive the Mary Felicetti Memorial Award for Mentoring and Supervision. Ms. Kimyagarov received the award from TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt. Congratulations to this exemplary mathematics educator!

TIME 2000 STUDENT HONORS HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER
At Dr. Artzt’s Annual Reunion Dinner on Monday, 25 January 2010, Ms. Marylin Cano, mathematics teacher at the Queens High School of Teaching, was honored for influencing TIME 2000 junior, Michelle Yacob, to become a mathematics teacher. The award was bestowed by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt. Congratulations to Ms. Cano!

On Thursday, 14 January, 47 TIME 2000 undergraduates and 5 faculty members participated in a special workshop analyzing the mathematics involved in the creation of wax figures.

TIME 2000 DIRECTOR AND GRADS SPEAK AT NASSAU COUNTY MATH TEACHERS’ AND SUPERVISORS’ CONFERENCE
On Friday, 8 January, TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, was joined by 7 TIME 2000 graduates in presenting the keynote address, “Math and Humor, No Joking” at a K-8 Conference sponsored by Nassau County Mathematics Teachers and Supervisors. Mr. Eric Glatz, Class of 2002, Assistant Principal at the Queens School of Inquiry; Ms. Sylvia Liu, Class of 2006, teacher at the Queens School of Inquiry; Ms. Tanica Meade, Class of 2006, teacher at CIS 339; Ms. Kendal Jones Askins, Class of 2007, teacher at JHS 194; Ms. Lysaundra Bisal, Class of 2007, teacher at H. Frank Carey HS; Ms. Samantha MacKinnon, Class of 2007, teacher at I.S 93; and Mr. John Aguirre, Class of 2008, presented snippets of humorous mathematics lessons at Molloy College. TIME 2000 FRESHMEN COMPLETE 10- WEEK FIELD WORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL (LAMS)
On Monday, 7 December, the freshmen completed their required 10-week field work for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics. Mrs. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics.

EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN
On Thursday, 3 December, 30 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Mrs. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with the 30 TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson, conducted by TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party, thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

TIME 2000 SENIORS SHARE EXCITING MATHEMATICS ACTIVITIES
At the December seminar, three seniors, Katherine Hurtado, Maria Leon-Chu, and Ferrin Mohammed-Bujan, shared lessons they created in their education courses. They demonstrated how well prepared they are to begin student teaching in spring 2010.

PROFESSOR JIM MATTHEWS DELIVERS THE KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT THE EIGHTH ANNUAL TIME 2000 CONFERENCE
On Friday, 20 November, TIME 2000 hosted its eighth annual conference, Celebrating Mathematics Teaching. More than 300 high school students and 25 teachers were registered for the conference. Also in attendance were 80 undergraduates, 10 preservice teachers, and 8 college faculty members. The opening session featured a past president of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State, Jim Matthews, professor of mathematics at Siena College. His magical touch set an enthusiastic tone for an outstanding conference. Local dynamic mathematics teachers made exciting presentations that involved the conference participants in mathematical investigations and explorations. The 80 TIME 2000 undergraduates volunteered to prepare for and assist at the conference. Several TIME 2000 graduates returned to be on the program and participate in a panel discussion conducted by Senior Sung Yan Chiu. Texas Instruments, Inc. donated TI-Nspire software and handheld devices that were raffled off at the end of the conference. Math for America of the Simons Foundation is gratefully acknowledged for funding the conference again this year.

At the monthly seminar, Senior Sung Yan Chiu conducted a workshop entitled, Mathigami: Math and the Art of Paper Folding. TIME 2000 undergraduates were challenged to create origami models. Sung demonstrated his talent and skills in the art of origami!

NEW YORK STATE K-8 MENTOR, JOANNE FLEMING, FEATURED AT THE OCTOBER SEMINAR
“The Equity Principle in Action: Differentiating Middle School Math Instruction,” a special session conducted by Ms. Joanne Fleming, Mineola Middle School, was the focus of the monthly seminar. Exciting instructional strategies, tasks, games, and activities engaged the TIME 2000 undergraduates, illustrating ways to reach all learners with meaningful mathematics.

A WARM WELCOME TO NEW AND RETURNING TIME 2000 STUDENTS
On Tuesday, 15 September, new freshmen and qualifiers had the opportunity to meet their TIME 2000 peers at the first monthly seminar of the 2009-2010 academic year. The seminar was designed for students to meet and to get to know each other. Several TIME 2000 faculty members were also present to join in the festivities.

TIME 2000 SENIOR RECEIVES AMTNYS SCHOLARSHIP
The entire Queens College community extends congratulations to Maria Leon Chu for receiving a 2009 scholarship from the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New York State (AMTNYS). This is the third time since 2001 that a TIME 2000 senior has received this highly competitive, prestigious, statewide award, bestowed upon a graduating senior entering the mathematics teaching profession! Maria joins Tara Wachter (2001) and Rebecca Steiner (2004) in this outstanding achievement. She will receive the award at the annual conference in Buffalo in November. Congratulations, Maria!

Samantha Aiello, a TIME 2000 transfer student from Queensborough Community College (QCC), received the prestigious Service Learning Leader Award from Kappa Delta Pi. Ms. Aiello served as president of Alpha Gamma Sigma Chapter at QCC.

CONGRESSMAN ANTHONY WEINER PRESENTS U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION GRANT TO TIME 2000
On Friday, 29 May 2009, Rep. Anthony Weiner visited Queens College to present a grant for $190,000 to the TIME 2000 Program, providing tuition for undergraduates pursuing a career in secondary mathematics teaching. Queens College President James Muyskens, and Vice President and Co-director of the grant Sue Henderson, joined Prof. Alice Artzt, Director of TIME 2000 and co-director of the grant, faculty, graduates, and students in accepting the award.

The Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education selected a TIME 2000 Junior, Sabrina A. Joseph, as the recipient of the Meredes Harris Award for her outstanding work in the Big Buddy Program. Congratulations Sabrina!

Queens College Scholarships were awarded to two TIME 2000 seniors, Chaviva Greenberg and Sarah Hofer. Chaviva received a QC Foundation Scholarship and Sarah received a Queens College Scholarship. Congratulations Chaviva and Sarah!

SEVENTH GRADERS FROM QSI PARTICIPATE IN A TIME 2000 CLASS
On Monday, 11 May 2009, 32 7th graders and their mathematics teacher, Ms. Nicole Francipane (TIME 2000 Class of 2007) from the Queens School of Inquiry (QSI), participated in the Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education class with TIME 2000 sophomores and their instructor, Professor Frances Curcio. The focus of the class was on a social issue—gender equity. Following the class, everyone was treated to a pizza party to celebrate the collaboration between QSI and TIME 2000.

CLASS OF 2009 READY TO GRADUATE
On Wednesday, 6 May, fourteen TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the eighth TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Patio Room at Queens College. More than 140 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, after viewing their “Guess Who” yearbook presentation. The seniors gave awards to faculty and staff, and then, they received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES STEP BACK INTO HISTORY
On Friday, 1 May 2009, the TIME 2000 sophomores went on a field trip to Historic Richmond Town on Staten Island to experience firsthand an era of history discussed in the course they are taking this semester, Historical, Philosophical, and Social Foundations of Education. The main stop was at the Voorlezer’s House, the oldest original schoolhouse in the United States, dating back to about 1695, when the Dutch settled on Staten Island.

On Friday, 24 April, TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt, and three TIME 2000 graduates, Mr. Eric Glatz, Class of 2002, Assistant Principal, Queens School of Inquiry, Ms. Sylvia Liu, Class of 2006, mathematics teacher, Queens School of Inquiry, and Ms. Kendal Jones, Class of 2007, mathematics teacher, JHS 194, gave a well-attended presentation entitled, " Using Technology to Create Humorous Lessons that Motivate Students," at the annual conference of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, in Washington, DC.

THE GOLDEN RATIO HIGHLIGHTED AT THE MONTHLY SEMINAR
Mr. Peter Hayes, Roslyn Public Schools, was the guest speaker at the monthly seminar. Students analyzed the mathematical structure of the golden ratio, the Fibonacci series, the golden triangle, and the golden rectangle.

TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES
Eighteen TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2008, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. The graduates were members of a panel, entertaining questions from the undergraduates about their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 19 February 2008, 20 February 2007, 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events below), everyone's so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the Class of 2009!

TIME 2000 SOPHOMORES BEGIN SPECIALLY DEVELOPED FIELD WORK AT THE QUEENS SCHOOL OF INQUIRY
On Tuesday, 3 February, the sophomores enrolled in SEYS 201W: Historical, Social, and Philosophical Foundations of Education, began their field work especially designed to highlight the key elements of the course as they are manifested in schools. Ms. Nicole Francipane, TIME 2000 graduate, Class of 2007, is collaborating with Professor Frances Curcio in the implementation of the field work.

TIME 2000 STUDENTS VISIT THE SALVADORI CENTER AT CCNY
On Monday, 12 January, TIME 2000 students went to a mathematics and architecture workshop at the Salvadori Center at CCNY. To begin developing application examples for teaching, they investigated mathematical relationships between shapes and weights.

TIME 2000 GRADUATES SPEAK AT ATMNYC ANNUAL CONFERENCE
On Saturday, 22 November, 6 TIME 2000 graduates made a presentation at the Annual Conference of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics of New York City, at Hunter College. The title of the session was "Using Technology to Create Humorous Lessons that Motivate Students." The presenters were Eric Glatz, Queens School of Inquiry; Kendal Jones, JHS 194; Deepak Joseph, Bayside HS; Samantha MacKinnon, IS 93; Lysaundra Bisal, H. Frank Carey HS; Sylvia Liu, Queens School of Inquiry, and John Aguirre, Class of 2008. In April 2009, they will also be speaking at the Annual Meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Washington, DC.

THE DR. SCHAFFER AND MR. STERN DANCE ENSEMBLE LAUNCH THE SEVENTH ANNUAL TIME 2000 CONFERENCE
On Friday, 14 November 2008, TIME 2000 hosted its seventh annual conference, Celebrating Mathematics Teaching. More than 350 high school students and 33 teachers were registered for the conference. Also in attendance were 80 undergraduates, 10 preservice teachers, and 11 college faculty members. The opening session featured the award-winning dance ensemble of Dr. Karl Schaffer and Mr. Erik Stern, with Saki. Local and nationally-acclaimed dynamic mathematics teachers made exciting presentations that involved the conference participants in mathematical investigations and explorations. The 80 TIME 2000 undergraduates volunteered to prepare for and assist at the conference. Several TIME 2000 graduates returned to be on the program and participate in a panel discussion conducted by Senior Asma Ismail. Texas Instruments, Inc. donated TI-Nspire handheld devices and software that were raffled off at the end of the conference. Math for America of the Simons Foundation is gratefully acknowledged for funding the conference again this year.

TIME 2000 FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR INDUCTED INTO THE LONG ISLAND MATHEMATICS EDUCATORS’ HALL OF FAME
Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, was inducted into the Long Island Mathematics Educators’ Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions to the mathematics education community as a teacher, researcher, scholar, author, colleague, and friend. The third annual event took place at Verdi’s of Westbury. Many colleagues and former students were present to join in the celebration. CONGRATULATIONS, DR. ARTZT!

GEOMETER PRESENTS WORKSHOP AT MONTHLY SEMINAR
Professor Emerita of Mathematics, Dr. Doris Schattschneider, Moravian College, Bethlehem, PA, a creator of Geometer’s Sketchpad, exemplified the connection between mathematics and art in her workshop entitled, “M. C. Escher’s Use of Transformations to Create Tiles.” Her presentation of Escher’s work, her use of Geometer’s Sketchpad, and her activities gave TIME 2000 undergraduates an appreciation of the complexities of Escher’s art as well as an understanding of the underlying mathematics.

CLASS OF 2008 READY TO GRADUATE
On Wednesday, 7 May, thirteen TIME 2000 seniors, undergraduates in the seventh TIME 2000 cohort, were honored at a graduation party in the Queens College Student Union. More than 175 family, friends, and TIME 2000 students, faculty, and staff were on hand to congratulate them, after viewing their PowerPoint yearbook presentation. The seniors gave awards to faculty and staff, and then, they received awards from Dr. Alice Artzt, Director of the TIME 2000 Program, Mrs. Naomi Weinman, Program Administrator, and from officers of the Tutoring Club, MT4.

TIME 2000 GRADUATES RETURN TO SHARE THEIR TEACHING EXPERIENCES
Thirteen TIME 2000 graduates from the classes of 2002 through 2007, were guests at the monthly seminar held during the winter recess to accommodate their full-time teaching schedules. The graduates were members of a panel, entertaining questions from the undergraduates about their teaching experiences. Just as successful as the panels on 20 February 2007, 21 February 2006, 22 February 2005, 17 February 2004, and 4 March 2003 (see Past Events below), everyone's so impressed with the graduates that they will definitely be invited back next year along with members of the Class of 2008!

At Dr. Artzt’s annual dinner reunion on Thursday, 17 January 2008, Mr. John Chae, TIME 2000 graduate from the Class of 2002, and mathematics teacher at Baldwin High School, Baldwin, NY, was honored for influencing one of his students to become a mathematics teacher. Mr. Chae received an award from TIME 2000 Director, Dr. Alice Artzt. Congratulations to this exemplary mathematics educator!

EIGHTH GRADERS ATTEND CLASS WITH TIME 2000 FRESHMEN
On Thursday, 6 December, 30 eighth graders from the Louis Armstrong Middle School accompanied their teacher, Mrs. Merna Porter, to Queens College, where they participated in an educational psychology class with TIME 2000 freshmen. The lesson was on attribution theory. Following the lesson, the eighth graders were guests at a pizza party thanking them for allowing the freshmen to observe them learning mathematics throughout the fall semester.

TIME 2000 FRESHMEN COMPLETE 10-WEEK FIELD WORK AT THE LOUIS ARMSTRONG MIDDLE SCHOOL (LAMS)
On Monday, 3 December, the freshmen completed their required 10-week field work for SEYS 221: The Psychology of Learning Mathematics. Mrs. Merna Porter, grade 8 mathematics teacher at LAMS, shared her insights and practices related to motivating students to learn mathematics. Details of this collaborative field work were published in the May 2005 issue of the Mathematics Teacher.

World-Renowned Mathemagician, BRADLEY FIELDS, Returns to Queens College to Launch the Sixth Annual Conference: Celebrating Mathematics Teaching
On Friday, 16 November 2007, TIME 2000 hosted its sixth annual conference, CELEBRATING MATHEMATICS TEACHING. The conference was a record-breaking event with more than 360 high school students, 30 teachers, 80 undergraduates and 14 college faculty members registered. The opening session featured world-renowned mathemagician, Bradley Fields, who mesmerized the audience with his quick hands, quick wit, and quick mind. This was his second TIME 2000 conference—he also shared the magic of mathematics at the Second Annual Conference on 24 October 2003 (see Past Events below). Local and nationally-acclaimed dynamic mathematics teachers made exciting presentations that involved the conference participants in mathematical investigations and explorations. The 80 TIME 2000 undergraduates volunteered to prepare for and assist at the conference. Several TIME 2000 graduates returned to be on the program and participate in a panel discussion conducted by Senior Randall Clarke. Texas Instruments, Inc. donated calculators and software that were raffled off at the end of the conference. Math for America of the Simons Foundation is gratefully acknowledged for funding the conference again this year.

MRS. LARISA BUKALOV SHARES HER ENTHUSIASM FOR TEACHING HIGH SCHOOL MATHEMATICS RESEARCH
At the monthly seminar, Mrs. Larisa Bukalov, mathematics teacher at Bayside High School, a Math-for-America Master Teacher Fellow, and a graduate of the Queens College Secondary Mathematics Education Master’s Degree Program, gave an interactive presentation entitled, “Mathematics Research: A Teaching Nightmare or a Dream Come True?” TIME 2000 students experienced the excitement and challenges of teaching a mathematics research course for high school level.

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS RETURNS TO VISIT TIME 2000
At the monthly October seminar, Ms. Fran Bellows Levy, representative of Texas Instruments, accompanied by Mr. Stan Pappo, TI Regional Instructor, made an exciting and informative presentation on “What’s New at Texas Instruments?” Such new and exciting technology as the TI-nspire was demonstrated and discussed. Similar to a previous special presentation by Dr. Margo Mankus (see 9 November 2004, under Past Events), this type of session supports TIME 2000’s goal of developing state-of-the-art secondary mathematics teachers for the 21st Century.

Ms. Rocío Saborido, mathematics teacher at Oceanside High School, and member of the TIME 2000 Class of 2003, was selected as Divisional Student Speaker for the Ceremony of Recognition, held on campus at the Colden Center. She received a Master of Science degree in Adolescent Mathematics Education.

At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Department (SEYS) Awards Ceremony, Ms. Rocío Saborido, member of the TIME 2000 Class of 2003, received one of the two Alice Artzt Awards for Mathematics Teaching. The cash award is bestowed upon a master’s degree graduate for academic excellence, passion for teaching mathematics, and commitment to the profession. Congratulations, Rocío!

Professor Millie Johnson, Western Washington University, Delivers Keynote Address at the Fifth Annual Conference: Celebrating Mathematics Teaching
On Friday, 17 November 2006, TIME 2000 hosted its fifth annual conference, CELEBRATING MATHEMATICS TEACHING. A record-breaking attendance of more than 320 high school students, 30 teachers, 80 undergraduates and 23 college faculty members, attended the conference. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Millie Johnson, Professor of Mathematics at Western Washington University. Local and nationally-acclaimed dynamic mathematics teachers made exciting presentations that involved the conference participants in mathematical investigations and explorations. The 80 TIME 2000 undergraduates volunteered to prepare for and assist at the conference. At the Secondary Education and Youth Services Department (SEYS) Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, 31 May, Julio Penagos, TIME 2000 member of the Class of 2006, received the Herb Fremont Award and a FREE scholarship. The Fremont Award is given to an outstanding senior who will enter the graduate program in secondary mathematics education following graduation from Queens College. The FREE scholarship, also awarded for academic excellence, supports graduate education at the College.

They focused on the successes of the TIME 2000 Program, and their collaboration documented in January 2005 issue of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society.

MAGIC, PARADOXES, AND PORTFOLIOS HIGHLIGHTED AT THE MONTHLY SEMINAR
During his motivational presentation entitled, “Mathemagic and Mathematical Paradoxes,” Mr. Michael Riccardo, Assistant Principal of Mathematics at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, involved the TIME 2000 students by examining fallacies and numerical phenomena. To help undergraduates prepare for submitting their annual portfolios, selected students also shared their exemplary portfolios.

She and a colleague presented their ideas on “Improving Students’ Achievement with Writing: Vertical Teaming in Mathematics.” They will be co- presenting at LIMAÇON in March 2006, and at the annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, in St. Louis, in April. TIME 2000 STUDENTS WITNESS THE LAUNCH OF NEW HORIZON, TRANSMITTED LIVE AT THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
On Thursday, 19 January 2006, during their visit to the Rose Space Center at the American Museum of Natural History, TIME 2000 undergraduates witnessed the 2 PM launch of the New Horizon satellite en route to Pluto, transmitted live from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. They visited various exhibits at the Rose Space Center, traveling 13 billion years along the “Cosmic Pathway,” viewing the “Scales of the Universe,” and enjoying the space show, “Passport to the Universe,” in the Hayden Planetarium. Special lectures and meetings with astrophysicists were arranged.
