Assignment 3 – Science Kit Review

How to Submit -
  • Use a word processor to type a script for your review.  Make sure to save frequently and to always back up your work in different locations.  Always make sure that your name, the date, the assignment number and course number are at the top of the page on your assignment. 
  • Make a short video or sceencast demonstrating how to use the science kit, along with the main points of your review. 
  • Copy and paste the text of your review into a message on the discussion board in BlackBoard.  You should also post the link to your video or webcast demonstration of the kit.  Your video should be short and to the point.  You can use a webcam, digital camera or the camera on a smart phone to make a video.  If you would like to make a screencast you can use software such as Jing or Camstudio.  This is what will be graded.  
  • After you have posted on the discussion board, submit backup copies in the following ways:
    • Copy and paste the text of your assignment into a Google document and share it with qcscied@gmail.com
    • Upload your Word document or equivalent using the Assignments link in BlackBoard.  Please do not submit pdf files.  
  • Keep electronic and paper copies for your records
Instructions for Assignment 3

This assignment is intended to give you valuable experience in evaluating, adapting, and using commercial science kits in the classroom. Form and small group of 2 to 3 students and select a kit to evaluate.  You should sign a kit out at least two weeks before your presentation. You can take a look at the available kits in Powdermaker Hall Room 135C before class on Thursday 2pm to 4pm or on Wednesdays from 3pm to 5pm or by appointment.

Answer the following questions in your evaluation:

1)  Please provide the following information on your kit:
   a) price, (1)
   b) where it can be purchased, (1)
   c) who produced the kit, (1)
   d) when was it produced, (1)
   e) and the title of the kit. (1)
   f)  science subjects and grade levels where this could be used (2)
2)  What are the goals of the kit?  (1)  What science knowledge and skills will students learn? (1)
3)  What are the strengths of the kit? (2)
4)  What are the weaknesses of the kit? (2)
5)  Would you recommend that science teachers purchase this kit?  (1) Why or why not? (1)
6)  How could the kit be modified to make it more effective? (2)
7)  What are some ways you could use this in your subject area?  Be as specific as possible.  (2)
8)  Any other comments. (1)

Each group should present their review to the class.  During the review, please let the class try out some activities from the kit.
